The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame committee has announced its preseason Bob Cousy Award watch list and Iowa State’s DeAndre Kane and Marcus Smart of Oklahoma State represented the Big 12 on the list.
Kane averaged 14.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 7.0 assists last season at Marshall and ranked 11th nationally in assists per game. Kane will play his final year of eligibility with the Cyclones.
Smart was the Big 12 Player and Freshman of the Year in 2012-13 and named to the All-Big 12 First Team after his debut season. He averaged 15.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 3.0 steals. He was one of five finalists for the Cousy Award and the only freshman on the list last season. Recently, he was named the 2013-14 Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year by the league’s head coaches.The Cousy Award is given annually to the best collegiate point guard in the country. The preseason list of 50 will be cut down to 20 players by early February and the final five players will be announced by early March. A press release announcing the 2014 winner will be issued the Thursday of Final Four week with the award present during the Hall of Fame Class Announcement and Press Conference on Championship Monday at the Final Four. The Big 12 is the host for the 2014 NCAA Men’s Final Four at Arlington’s AT&T Stadium on April 5 and 7.
