Big 12 Players Collect National Honors at Women’s Final Four
April 06, 2013

Baylor was one of three teams to place two players on the 2013 WBCA Division I Coaches’ All-America Team, which the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association announced in a ceremony held at the New Orleans Arena during the 2013 NCAA® Women’s Final Four® Super Saturday festivities.

Brittney Griner picked up first team honors for the third consecutive season while Odyssey Sims was recognized for the second straight year. The 10-member team was decided from a group of 52 finalists by the selection committee at an in-person meeting held during the 2013 WBCA National Convention.

Hallie Christofferson (Iowa State), Angel Goodrich (Kansas), Brittany Chambers (K-State), Aaryn Ellenberg (Oklahoma) and Toni Young (Oklahoma State) were among the players who garnered All-America honorable mention. This is the 39th year of the WBCA Coaches’ All-America program, which began in 1975.

In addition to WBCA honors, Griner was also named Associated Press and USBWA Player of the Year.

Griner is the second-highest-scoring player in NCAA history (3,203) and also holds the career records for blocks (748) and dunks (18).  She was named the Big 12 Player of the Year for the third straight season, was the league’s Defensive Player of the Year for the fourth straight season and was selected as the Big 12 Championship Most Outstanding Player for the third straight year.  Griner is the first NCAA player to score 2,000 points and block 500 shots, while she is one of just six players in NCAA history to surpass 3,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds.  Griner is ranked first in the nation in field-goal percentage (.607) and second in blocked shots per game (4.14).

Through three seasons with Baylor, Sims has scored 1,479 points, which is 10th on Baylor’s career-scoring chart, while having dished out 469 assists.  Sims is a three-time All-Big 12 selection and has twice been named to the Big 12 Championship All-Tournament Team. This year she was named to the All-Big 12 first team and the Big 12 All-Defensive team. Sims has helped guide the Lady Bears to a 108-5 record during the past three seasons and a 60-1 record in Big 12 action.  The two-time WBCA All-American is second in the nation in assist turnover ratio (2.67), 25th in assists per game (5.8) and 36th in steals per game (2.75).
