CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL

Under sunny skies with the temperature in the mid-80s, conditions were favorable for the first round of the 2014 Big 12 Women’s Golf Championship.

The 13th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners, who finished fourth last year, shot a plus-three on the par-72, 6370-yard course at The UT Golf Club for a total score of 291 to lead the field. Two strokes separate the Wildcats from Oklahoma as Kansas State shot a 293 on the day.

Texas Tech (295) sits at third, with host Texas, Baylor and Kansas tied at fourth with a plus-nine score of 297. Due to injury, Oklahoma State played with four student-athletes and finished the day in seventh with a round one score of 298.

Iowa State (302) and TCU (310) round-out the field at eighth and ninth, respectively.

Individually, Oklahoma’s Chirapat Jao-Javanil and Kansas’ Yupaporn Kawinpakorn paced all golfers shooting a minus-three score of 69 with five birdies. Jao-Javanil and Kawinpakorn are trailed by Texas Tech’s Stephanie Bertlesen, Baylor’s Laura Lonardi, K-State’s Gianna Misenhelter and Oklahoma State’s Amy Ruengmateekhun all tied in third with a score of 70.

K-State leads all teams with three golfers on the leaderboard’s top 10, including Misenhelter and Olivia Eliasson and Carly Ragains tied at eighth.

The second round gets underway at 8:00 a.m. with all teams teeing off from the first hole.
