Three Big 12 student-athletes have been named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District Softball Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Baylor’s Whitney Canion and Liz Paul, along with Oklahoma’s Jessica Vest were named to the All-District 7 squad.
Paul, a senior right-hander from Sugar Land, Texas, is 3-0 on the season with 24 appearances and three saves in 63.2 innings of work while carrying a 4.0 GPA in accounting at BU. She’s walked only 12 batters and players are hitting just .225 against her this season. She became Baylor’s all-time leader in relief appearances this season and ranks third in the Big 12 with a 1.98 ERA. In addition to her three wins, she’s completed two games and combined for three shutouts on the season.
Canion, a sixth-year senior from Aledo, Texas, carries a 4.0 GPA in her sports management master’s program after already graduating with BBA in business where she carried a 3.50 GPA. Through Wednesday night’s game with McNeese State where she threw the fifth no-hitter of her career, Canion is 23-9 with a Big 12-leading 1.37 ERA. The lefthander, among other statistical categories, is Baylor’s all-time leader in wins, strikeouts, innings pitched, shutouts and complete games. She also ranks third on the Big 12’s career list for win with 115.
Vest, a 2013 Academic All-Big 12 First Team member, holds a 3.90 GPA in multidisciplinary studies while starting 35 games this season. The infielder currently holds a career-high in fielding percentage and hits.
The 2014 Capital One Academic All-District Softball Teams recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. To be eligible for academic all-district teams, student-athletes must be starters or important reserves with at least 3.30 cumulative grade point averages. Candidates also must complete at least one full academic year at the nominating institution and be at least sophomores athletically.First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
