Baylor and Texas Tech opened up the 2012 NCAA Soccer Championship with first round victories over the weekend. Both will now represent the Conference in the Second Round on Friday, Nov. 16.
Third-seeded Baylor collected a 3-1 victory over Arizona State on Friday at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium to advance to the second round for a second straight season. With goals from Hanna Gilmore, Alex Klein and Taylor Heatherly, the Bears improved to 18-1-4 on the season, while upping their unbeaten streak to 19 games and their undefeated string to seven. The 18 wins are the most in program history, surpassing the 17 victories posted by the 1996 club. Baylor will now face Georgetown (16-3-3) Friday at 3 p.m. at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Texas Tech's Dawn Ward propelled the Red Raiders to a 2-0 shutout victory over North Texas, giving Texas Tech its first posteason victory in program history. With the victory in front of a season-high crowd of 1,738, Texas Tech improved to 9-1 at the John Walker Soccer Complex and 16-5-1 overall. The Red Raiders move on the face No. 1 seed Florida State (17-3-0) Friday at 6 p.m. at Seminole Soccer Complex in Tallahassee, Fla.
The Big 12's other representative, West Virginia, fell at home in first round action 2-1 to Princeton Friday.
The third round of the NCAA Tournament will continue Nov. 17 and 18 with quarterfinal play beginning Nov. 23. The College Cup is set for Nov. 30 and Dec. 2 in San Diego, Calif.
