Mountaineers and Red Raiders Advance to NCAA Second Round
November 15, 2013

Texas Tech opened the 2013 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship with a win while West Virginia and Rutgers played a scoreless 110 minutes in Morgantown, the Mountaineers defeated the Scarlet Knights 3-0 in penalty kicks to advance in the postseason. The Red Raiders and Mountaineers will now represent the conference in the second round on Friday, Nov. 22.

West Virginia advances to the round of 32 for the first time since 2010. After the match ended in a 0-0 draw following 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute sudden death overtimes, the Big 12 Conference champion Mountaineers (16-3-3) made their first three penalty kicks, while denying all three of the Scarlet Knights' (13-4-5) attempts.

Texas Tech jumped out to an early first half lead and never looked back as the Red Raiders cruised to a 3-0 shutout victory over Minnesota in the first round of the NCAA Soccer Championship at the John Walker Soccer Complex. The Red Raiders (18-2-2) outshot Minnesota 15-8 on the evening while posting their 17th shutout on the year and breaking a school record with their 10th home victory of the season. Janine Beckie notched two of TTU's goals while Jessica Fuston added one of her own. Texas Tech now advances to play former Big 12 rival Texas A&M Friday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Oklahoma State saw its season come to an end Friday night in the opening round of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship as the Cowgirls dropped a 2-1 decision to Arkansas at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex. Madison Mercado recorded the lone goal of the match for OSU. The loss snapped a string of six-straight NCAA tourney berths in which the Cowgirls had advanced to at least the second round. Oklahoma State finish the season with a 9-7-6 mark.

The second and third rounds of the 2013 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship will take place on Nov. 22 and 24 at on-campus sites followed by on-campus quarterfinals on Nov. 29 and 30 and the Women's College Cup on Dec. 6 and 8 in Cary, N.C. at WakeMed Soccer Park.
