Oklahoma State Reaches NCAA Championship’s Third Round

For a second straight year, the Oklahoma State Cowgirls have advanced to the third round of the NCAA Soccer Championship. OSU shutout Illinois 1-0 on Friday night at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex for its 21st win of the year in second round action. The Cowgirls will now host Maryland on Sunday at 1 p.m.

It is the 13th straight season that a Big 12 team has advanced to the third round of the NCAA tournament. The Conference has had a least one representative in the third round in 14 of the 16 years of the Conference's existence.

Oklahoma State (21-1-2) got a goal from Annika Niemeier in the 25th minute and its defense held the Illini scoreless the rest of the way for the victory. It was OSU's 17th shutout of the season.

The Big 12's two other teams in the tournament both fell in second round play. Baylor (15-4-3) lost 5-0 to No. 18 North Carolina in Gainesville, Fla. The Bears advanced past the first round of the NCAA Championship for the first time in program history.

The third-seeded Texas A&M Aggies (16-6-2) ended the season with a 3-1 loss to Virginia Tech in Charlottesville, Va.

The NCAA Championship will continue with quarterfinal play on Fri., Nov. 25. The College Cup is set for Dec. 2 and 4 in Kennesaw, Ga.
