Tia Brooks (Oklahoma) and Felix Obi (Baylor) have been named Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week for competition April 4-7. The honor is Brooks’ third of the year and fifth in her illustrious career. Obi collects his first weekly award.
Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Male Athlete of the Week
Felix Obi, Baylor, Fr., El Paso, Texas
The freshman continued his strong outdoor season with the second-best triple jump in school history (51-6.50, 15.71m) to win the Florida Relays triple jump crown. On his second to last jump of the day, Obi recorded the leap that would have been a school-record, prior to his jump last week at the Texas Relays.
Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Female Athlete of the Week
Tia Brooks, Oklahoma, Sr., Grand Rapids, Mich.
Brooks, the reigning NCAA shot put champion, opened her outdoor season in fashion breaking her own school record and throwing a career-best 61-05.50 (18.73m) to claim her 10th-straight shot put title of the 2013 season. With the throw, she leads all NCAA shot putters and is the first to surpass the 60-foot barrier, leading the second-best performance in the country by nearly four full feet. Additionally, her performance marked the sixth-best throw in outdoor collegiate history. Brooks is undefeated in the event this season.
