Longhorns Headline Big 12 Menís Golf Postseason Honors
May 01, 2013

The 2013 Big 12 men’s golf postseason awards have been announced, with the league champion Texas Longhorns leading the way.

Texas freshman Brandon Stone becomes the fifth male golfer in Big 12 history and second-straight Longhorn to tally both the Player and Newcomer of the Year awards. UT standout Jordan Spieth accomplished the feat last year. Stone is the fourth-straight Texas player to earn Newcomer of the Year honors. The Pretoria, South Africa, native finished the season as the nation’s second-ranked player after winning the Big 12 Championship at Prairie Dunes in Hutchinson, Kan. Stone carded a three-day total of 210 (even par) to win the title by three shots. The Player and Newcomer of the Year are automatically selected as the highest ranked individual from the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings following the league championship.

Texas head coach John Fields was named Coach of the Year, as voted by the league’s coaches. The honor is Field’s fourth  and the first since 2004. The Longhorns have been one of the nation’s top-five teams all year, recording five team victories on the season, including the Big 12 Championship.

Texas Tech’s Finley Ewing IV was named Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as voted on by the league’s coaches. The senior business management major boasts a 3.35 cumulative grade point average and competed in each of the Red Raiders’ 13 tournaments this year. The Dallas-native led Texas Tech with a 72.4 scoring average, finishing the season ranked No. 61 nationally.

Leading the way on the All-Big 12 Team are Texas and Oklahoma State with three representatives each. Stone, Cody Gribble and Kramer Hickok make up the list for the Longhorns. The Cowboys placed Talor Gooch, Jordan Niebrugge and Ian Davis on the list, while Big 12 newcomer TCU had two representatives make the squad in Julien Brun and Pontus Gad.

Iowa State and Texas Tech had one honoree apiece with Scott Fernandez and Ewing IV, respectively. The team was identified using the top 10 highest-ranked golfers according to the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings following the Big 12 Championship.
