Texas climbed from No. 6 to No. 2 in this week’s AVCA national rankings after taking down No. 1 Penn State on Saturday and No. 2 Stanford on Sunday. The back-to-back victories mark the first time the Longhorns have defeated a No. 1 and No. 2 opponent in the same season since 1995. UT hosted the Nike Big Four Classic, drawing 8,629 fans, and recording the first back-to-back sellouts in program history.
Iowa State dropped to No. 17 after a pair of losses to ranked foes last weekend. Oklahoma and Kansas State are receiving votes.
With a 7-0 start to the season, West Virginia is off to its best opening in program history. WVU has lost just one set this year and has recorded six sweeps.
Kansas State also sports an undefeated mark. The Wildcats recorded three sweeps over the weekend in the K-State Invitational.
Seven of the league’s 35 matches this week are against opponents ranked in the top 25 with KU visiting No. 24 Creighton on Tuesday and No. 25 Wisconsin on Friday. ISU will play St. Mary’s (Calif.), which is receiving votes, and No. 12 Nebraska in the Ameritas Player’s Challenge in Omaha this weekend. UT takes on Arizona State (RV) and Illinois (No. 14), while K-State meets its first ranked opponent in No. 23 California.
Last Tuesday night vs. SMU, Baylor’s Adrien Richburg had 10 kills on 10 attempts to set a Baylor record for attack percentage in a 3-set match. She is the only player in school history to have 10 kills in a match without an error; Richburg passed the previous record held by Cory Silverston who had 15 kills on 16 attempts against Rice Oct. 7, 1992. Richburg’s hitting percentage of 1.000 ties two other Big 12 players who have hit that - Tracy Stalls (NU vs. TTU, 13-0-13, Nov. 24 2007) and Megan Korver (NU vs. ISU, 10-0-10, Sept. 25 1998).
A pair of league seniors reached 1,000 career kills last week as KU’s Caroline Jarmoc surpassed 1,000 with 19 on Tuesday. Her 1,045 career kills are the second-most among current Big 12 players. She trails fellow senior Kaitlynn Pelger from Kansas State. Oklahoma’s Sallie McLaurin has totaled 1,018 in her career, which ranks third for active players. Jarmoc also entered the top 10 career list for solo blocks. Her total of 83 ranks 10th all-time in league history.
Kansas’ Brianne Riley moved into the top 10 on the Big 12 career chart for digs last week. She has totaled 1,612, which currently ranks eighth on the list.
