Pairings for Championship Matches Set

FORT WORTH - The Baylor and Oklahoma men and Baylor and Oklahoma State women will compete for the 2014 Big 12 tennis crowns in the finals of the 2014 Big 12 Championships. The four teams picked up semifinal victories on Saturday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center to advance to Sunday’s matches.
 
On the men’s side, Oklahoma will be looking for its third-consecutive postseason crown while Baylor is in search of the program’s eighth postseason Big 12 title. The Baylor women will take the court looking for their seventh title while the Cowgirls aim for a second crown and first since 2003.
 
Top-seeded Baylor (22-5) defeated No. 5 Oklahoma State (21-7), 4-0, as the Bears picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to take the doubles point and jump out to a 1-0 lead. Tony Lupieri notched the Bears’ first singles point with a 6-1, 6-4 win over OSU’s Chris Haworth. The Cowboys struck back with a win at No. 5 by Brady Bohrnstedt. Bohrnstedt took down #107 Michel Dornbusch, 7-5, 6-1. Ranked second in the nation, Baylor’s Julian Lenz took down #70 Jakob Sude, 6-3, 7-6 at the No. 1 spot. OSU’s Arjun Kadhe answered with a three-set win over Diego Galeano to cut the deficit to 3-2. Mate Zsiga picked up the fourth singles point over Lucas Gerch to give the Bears the 4-1 victory and a spot in the championship match.
 
Third-seeded Oklahoma (23-2) avenged a regular season loss to Red River rival Texas (20-5) when the Sooners topped the Longhorns, 4-2. Wins at No. 1 and No. 2 gave the Sooners the doubles point. In singles play Axel Alvarez Llamas, ranked No. 6 nationally picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2, while Andrew Harris and Austin Siegel notched wins at No. 3 and No. 5 to give the Sooners the 4-0 shutout over Texas. The Sooners will make their fourth-consecutive appearance in the Big 12 Championship finals on Sunday.
 
On the women’s side, Baylor (23-6) knocked off in-state rival Texas Tech (17-8), 4-0. The Lady Bears snagged the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. The Lady Bears swept singles play to win, 4-0. Blair Shankle picked up the first singles point at No. 4, 6-2, 6-1 over TTU’s Nikki Sanders. Ema Burgic and Alex Leatu picked up victories at No. 2 and No. 5 respectively to clinch the win. Baylor will be making its first appearance in the finals since 2011.
 
The Oklahoma State Cowgirls (15-7) earned the doubles point against Texas (12-12) with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. The Cowgirls notched wins at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 to clinch the match, 4-1. In a matchup of top 50 opponents, #15 Breaunna Addison (Texas) knocked off #44 Viktoriya Lushkova (OSU) giving the ‘Horns their lone singles point. This is the second-consecutive season Oklahoma State has advanced to the final match.
 
Both of Sunday’s championship matches will begin at 1 p.m. CT at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth.
 
Single-session tickets are available for $5 (adults) and $4 (youth) at the gate.
