Missouri vs. Oklahoma

Oklahoma’s Win...

  • Gives the South Division a 9-4 record in the Big 12 Championship game all-time.
  • Marks the fifth straight win for the South Division in the Championship game.
  • Makes Oklahoma the Big 12 Champion for the third straight year and fourth time in the last five years.
  • Marks OU’s sixth Big 12 Championship (all in the 2000s) and improves OU’s championship game record to 6-1 all-time (won in 2000, 02, 04, 06, 07 and 08 and lost in 03).
  • Missouri fell to 0-2 in the Championship game all-time.  The Tigers also lost last year to Oklahoma 38-17.
  • Oklahoma improved to 66-24-5 all-time against Missouri, including a 7-1 mark since the inception of the Big 12 Conference.
  • Oklahoma improved to 12-1 on the season while Missouri fell to 9-4 on the year.
 

Championship Game Notable

  • Oklahoma’s Chris Brown became the first player to rush for 100 yards in the championship game since Adrian Peterson of Oklahoma ran for 172 yards vs. Colorado in 2004.
  • Missouri’s 21 points were the most by the losing team since Texas scored 37 in a 39-37 loss to Colorado in 2001.
  • The attendance mark of 71,004 was the fifth highest in championship game history. Four of the five most attended games in the history of the championship have been in Arrowhead Stadium.
  • Oklahoma’s field goal on the opening possession of the game marked the first time a team scored on the game’s first possession since the Sooners scored a touchdown on the game’s first possession against Colorado in 2004 (Oklahoma scored a touchdown in that game).
  • For the seventh straight year in the championship game, one team was shutout in the first quarter.  The team that did not score in the opening period came back to win twice, including last year when Oklahoma trailed Missouri 3-0, but won 38-17.
  • Oklahoma’s 30 points at halftime were the second most in a first half in a Big 12 Championship game behind 42 by Texas vs. Colorado (3) in 2005.
  • The 31-point halftime advantage was the third-largest in championship game history.  Texas led Colorado by 39 (42-3) in 2005 and Nebraska led Texas A&M by 34 (37-3) in 1997.
 

Big 12 Championship Game Record List

  • The combined 83 points were the most in a championship game passing the 76 by Colorado (39) and Texas (37) in 2001.
  • Oklahoma’s 62 points were the second most scored in championship game history behind 70 by Texas in its 70-3 win against Colorado in 2005.
  • The 41-point scoring margin was the second largest in championship game history behind 67 points (Texas defeated Colorado 70-3 in 2005).
  • Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford set a Big 12 Championship game record for passing yardage with 384.  The previous mark was 353 by James Brown of Texas vs. Nebraska in 1996.
  • Bradford set a Big 12 Championship game record for completions with 34.  The previous record for game completions was 27 by Jason White of Oklahoma in 2003.
  • Oklahoma’s RB duo of Chris Brown and Mossis Madu both tied a Big 12 Championship game record with three touchdowns.  They became the ninth and tenth players to accomplish that feat and the first since Jamaal Charles of Texas vs. Colorado in 2005.
  • Oklahoma WR Juaquin Iglesis tied the Big 12 Championship game record for touchdowns in a game with two.  Both of his scores came in the first half.  He tied four others, including former Sooners Malcolm Kelly (2006) and Mark Clayton (2004).
  • Iglesias’ nine receptions were the second most in championship game history behind 10 by Malcolm Kelly, of Oklahoma vs. Nebraska in 2006.
  • Oklahoma TE Jermaine Gresham’s eight receptions tied for the third most in a Big 12 Championship game (10 by Malcolm Kelly of Oklahoma vs. Nebraska in 2006).
  • Oklahoma established a game record for team first downs with 39.  The old mark was 26 set by three teams, most recently Texas vs. Colorado in 2005.
  • Oklahoma set a new championship game record for total yards with 627.  The old mark was 536 by Nebraska vs. Texas A&M in 1997.
  • Oklahoma set a championship game record for total plays with 93.  The old mark 87 by Nebraska vs. Texas in 1996.
  • Oklahoma set a team record for passing yardage with 384.  The old mark was 370 by Texas vs. Colorado in 2001.
  • Oklahoma set the Big 12 championship game team record for completions in a game with 34.  The old mark was 29 by Oklahoma vs. Kansas State in 2003
  • Oklahoma’s six rushing touchdowns tied the championship game record of set by Texas in 2005 and Nebraska in 1997.
  • Oklahoma set the Big 12 championship game record for first down passes with ???. The previous record was 17 by Oklahoma vs. Kansas State in 2003.
 

Missouri Notes

  • QB Chase Daniel became the Missouri career total offense yardage leader.  He entered the game with 12,988 yards.  He moved ahead of Brad Smith (13,088) and had 13,256 at halftime.
  • Senior CB Tru Vaughns made his first career start.
  • PK Jeff Wolfert improved his career PAT mark to a perfect 182 of 182.
  • TE Chase Coffman recorded his 30th career touchdown reception.  He was already Missouri’s all-time touchdown reception leader.
  • Former walk-on WR Tommy Saunders moved into sixth place on the MU career receptions list.  He finished the game with 144 to pass current Kansas City Chief Will Franklin.
 

Oklahoma Notes

  • Oklahoma established a new NCAA record for points in a season.  OU entered the game with 640 and the old mark was 656 by Hawai’i in 2006. Oklahoma becomes the first team to pass 700 points in a season (702).
  • Oklahoma set a school record for total yards in a season with 7,307.  The Sooners entered the game with 6,680 and the old mark was 6,682 set in 2003.
  • Oklahoma scored on its opening possession for the 11th time this year (nine touchdowns and two field goals).
  • RB DeMarco Murray broke the Oklahoma school record for season all-purpose yardage.  He entered the game with 2,141 and passed Quentin Griffin, who had 2,148 in 2002.
  • RB Chris Brown became the third player in the Big 12 to record 1,000 yards rushing this season.  Brown entered the game with 988 yards.  He joined teammate Murray DeMarco and Oklahoma State’s Kendall Hunter.
  • QB Sam Bradford broke the school record for career passing yards.  He entered the game with 7,201.  Josh Heupel held the old mark with 7,456 from 1999-2000. 
  • Bradford also established a new school mark for career total offense.  He entered the game with 7,266.  Heupel held the old record with 7,522 from 1999-2000.
  • Mossis Madu established a career rushing best with his first career 100-yard rushing game.  His previous best was 65 yards vs. Texas A&M this year.
  • Leading 10-7 early in the second quarter, Oklahoma scored 31 consecutive points to lead 41-7 before Missouri responded with a touchdown to make it 41-14 with 3:59 left in the third quarter.
