Oklahoma and Texas both got off to strong starts at the Women’s College World Series on Thursday, winning their opening round games at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.

Texas tallied the league’s first win of the day, knocking off Arizona State 6-3. Oklahoma followed the Longhorns with a 7-1 victory over Michigan in the last game of the day.

The Sooners and Longhorns will now face off tomorrow night at 8:30 p.m. in the winner’s bracket. Oklahoma won the season series between the two, taking two out of three games in Austin last month.

Oklahoma was paced by senior pitcher Keilani Ricketts, who threw her sixth no-hitter of the season and seventh in her career. It is the 16th no-hit performance in WCWS history and first since 2008.

Lauren Chamberlain broke the game open in the fourth inning with a two-run home run to give the Sooners a 6-1 lead. The blast was Chamberlain’s 28th on the year and 58th in her career, tying the sophomore for second on the Big 12 career list.

Senior Kim Bruins led the way for UT with a home run in the fifth inning that proved to be the winning blow as Texas toppled the Sun Devils 6-3. Second baseman Stephanie Ceo was two-for-three with a RBI and shortstop Taylor Thom and third baseman Taylor Hoagland each contributed a double and a RBI.

In the circle for the Longhorns, senior Blaire Luna (31-5) allowed four hits and three earned runs over six innings of work with 10 strikeouts to get the win, while Bruins struck out a pair and permitted one hit in the seventh inning to earn the save.

Tomorrow night’s game between the two Conference rivals will be televised on ESPN at 8:30 p.m. CT.
