Texas’ Kim Bruins and Blaire Luna have been named the Big 12 Player and Pitcher of the week for games March 19-24. The honor marks the first time since 2011 two Longhorns have swept the awards. Bruins picks up the first award of her career while Luna records her second honor of the season and 11th of her career.
Big 12 Player of the Week

Bruins hit .500 last week in leading Texas to a pair of wins against No. 18/15 Baylor. She paced the squad with four hits and four RBI and collected one of the team’s two extra-base hits. She posted a .625 slugging percentage and .500 on-base percentage in helping the Longhorns open Big 12 play at 2-0 for the sixth time in seven years.
In the Saturday road contest against the Bears, Bruins plated two runs with a double in the ninth inning that provided the insurance runs in Texas’ 4-0 victory. Sunday, Bruins matched her career high with three hits in the game and drove in two runs. The Redlands, Calif., product delivered the game-winning run with a single through the left side in the bottom of the fifth inning and tacked on the game’s final run with a single up the middle in the sixth.
Bruins is hitting .583 with seven hits, five RBI and three runs scored in in her last three contests. She already owns five multiple-RBI games and six multi-hit performances after having just three and four, respectively, in all of 2012. Bruins’ four hits over the weekend matched her total from all of last year during league games.
Big 12 Pitcher of the Week
Blaire Luna, Texas, Sr., RHP, Austin, Texas
Luna earned a pair of victories against No. 18/15 Baylor over the weekend in helping Texas to a 2-0 start in Big 12 Conference play. She allowed just four hits, three singles and a double, and struck out 25 while throwing two complete games and not surrendering an earned run.
The senior started the week in Waco, no-hitting the Bears through seven-and-a-third innings before allowing a one-out single in the bottom of the eighth. She struck out 14 in the nine-inning complete-game performance and fanned two batters in five of the nine frames. Luna threw a shutout in the Big 12 opener for the fourth time in her career. Sunday, she faced the Bears again and surrendered only two hits in the victory.
This season, Luna is 7-1 with a 1.19 ERA against top-25 teams. She has struck out 98 batters in 59.0 innings versus ranked opponents. She entered the week leading all Division I pitchers in strikeouts per seven innings with 13.4 and stood third in fewest hits allowed per seven innings at 2.77. Overall, her 15-1 record is the best start of her career.
