Six Big 12 Teams Learn Bowl Destinations

Six Big 12 teams learned their bowl destinations and opponents Sunday night. The Conference earned a second BCS bid, with Oklahoma joining Baylor as teams playing in BCS bowls.

The post-season figures to be challenging as the Big 12’s six bowl opponents have a combined won-loss record of 60-14. Five of the six Big 12 bowl opponents are in the top 15 of the final BCS rankings.

Baylor, which won its first Big 12 championship Saturday, earned the Conference’s bid to the Fiesta Bowl and will face Central Florida. Oklahoma, which finished 11th in the final BCS standings, was selected as an at-large BCS team and will play in the Sugar Bowl against Alabama, the defending national champion.

Here’s the bowl-by-bowl break down for the Big 12.

Buffalo Wild Wings
Kansas State vs. Michigan
Dec. 28 9:15 p.m. ESPN
Team records:
Kansas State 7-5 overall, 5-4 in Big 12; Michigan 7-5 overall, 3-5 in Big Ten Legends Division.
Coaches: Bill Snyder, Kansas State; Brady Hoke, Michigan.
Kansas State info: The Wildcats are 1-1 all-time in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl (formerly the Copper and bowls). K-State is 1-1 in Sun Devil Stadium, winning the 1997 Fiesta and losing the 2004 Fiesta. … Kansas State has played 17 bowl games and 15 have come under coach Bill Snyder. … The Wildcats’ five losses were by 10 points or less. … K-State started 2-4 and then won four straight games to become bowl eligible.
Michigan info: This will be just the seventh time that the Wolverines have played a bowl game in December and it’s Michigan's first trip to Arizona since winning the 1986 Fiesta Bowl. … Michigan has a 20-22 record in bowl games. … Wolverines wide receiver Jeremy Gallon had 369 receiving yards on Oct. 19 against Indiana and he’s the top target for mobile quarterback Devin Gardner.

Texas vs. Oregon

Texas 8-4 overall, 7-2 in Big 12; Oregon 10-2 overall, 7-2 in Pac-12 North Division.
Coaches: Mack Brown, Texas; Mark Helfrich, Oregon.
Texas info: This will be the Longhorns’ third appearance in the Alamo Bowl’s 21-year history. They defeated Iowa, 26-24, in 2006 and defeated Oregon State, 31-27, last season. … Texas will be making its 52nd all-time bowl appearance. That’s the second-most in NCAA history. … The Longhorns have won nine of their last 11 bowls and have a 10-4 record under coach Mack Brown. … Texas will be facing a Pac-12 (formerly Pac-10) team for the eighth time in its last 13 bowl trips.
Oregon info: The Ducks rank third nationally in scoring offense (46.8 points per game) and second in totals yards (573.0 pg). … Quarterback Marcus Mariota ranks sixth in the nation in passing efficiency (167.9 rating) and ninth in total offense (332.8 per game). … Oregon is allowing just 21.6 points per game which ranks No. 25 in the nation. … Mark Helfrich in his first season as the Ducks, replacing Chip Kelly. … Oregon started the season 8-0 before finishing 2-2.

Texas Tech vs. Arizona State

Arizona State info: The Sun Devils won seven straight to win the Pac-12 South Division but lost to Stanford in the championship game, the second loss to the Cardinal this season. … The Red Raiders and Sun Devils have meet once previously, the 1999 season opener which Arizona State won, 31-13, in Tempe. … Running back Marion Grice has 996 yards rushing and will test a Texas Tech defense that allows 194 yards rushing per game.

Baylor vs. Central Florida

Baylor 11-1, 8-1 in Big 12; Central Florida 11-1 overall, 8-0 in American Athletic Conference.
Coaches: Art Briles, Baylor; George O’Leary, Central Florida.
Baylor info: The Bears won their first Big 12 title and the third conference title in school history. … Baylor leads the nation in scoring offense at 53.3 points per game and total offense with 624 yards per game. … The Bears are playing a bowl game for a school-record fourth consecutive season. … Junior quarterback Bryce Petty is second in passing efficiency. … Baylor has 17 interceptions this season and has allowed 19 passing touchdowns.
Central Florida info: The Knights are 7-1 in games decided by seven points or less, and their lone loss came to South Carolina, a 28-25 decision on Sept. 28. … Central Florida has a 2-3 record in bowl games and has won its last two. … Like Baylor, Central Florida is playing in its first BCS game and its first New Year’s Day bowl game. … Blake Bortles, the Knights’ junior quarterback, is ninth nationally in passing efficiency. 

Oklahoma vs. Alabama

Oklahoma info: The Sooners have played in nine BCS games under coach Bob Stoops, winning the national title and playing for the national championship in 2004, 2005 and 2009. … This will mark only the fifth time the teams have played. Oklahoma leads the series 2-1-1 and beat Alabama 20-13 when they last met in 2003. … The Sooners will make their seventh appearance in the Sugar Bowl, the most of any non-SEC school.
Alabama info: The Crimson Tide have won three of the last four national championships and only an astounding loss to Auburn kept them from going for a three-peat. … No college football game has ever featured two teams – Oklahoma (27) and Alabama (35) – that own more all-time combined bowl victories (62). …  In six years at Alabama, Nick Saban is 5-1. Oklahoma State info: The Cowboys are making their fourth trip to the Cotton Bowl. The Cowboys last played in the Classic in 2010, falling to Ole Miss, 21-7. … Oklahoma State leads the Big 12 in scoring defense and is second in scoring offense. … The Cowboys’ last meeting with Missouri came in Columbia in 2011 and they beat the Tigers 45-24 on their way to winning the Big 12 championship.
Missouri info: The Tigers completed their second season in the SEC by winning the East Division then losing to Auburn, 59-42, in Saturday’s SEC Championship game. … Missouri defeated Arkansas to win the Cotton Bowl in 2008. That game was played at Cotton Bowl Stadium in Fair Park. … The Tigers have a 29-23 lead in the overall series and won five of their nine Big 12 meetings from 1996-2011.
