This marks the 10th time in the bowl's 20 year history (and the 5th time in the last 6 years) the game will be played on December 29. It will also be the fourth Saturday kickoff in the last six years.
The previous three Saturday games resulted in sellout crowds and two of the top most-watched bowl games in ESPN history:
- Michigan State vs. Texas Tech (2010): #1 most-watched non-BCS game in ESPN history and #7 attendance in Valero Alamo Bowl history (64,757)
- Penn State vs. Texas A&M (2007): #1 attendance in Valero Alamo Bowl history (66,166)
- Texas vs. Iowa (2006): #2 most-watched non-BCS game in ESPN history, #2 attendance in Valero Alamo Bowl history (65,875) and second afternoon game (the 2001 game kicked off at 2:30 p.m. and 2006 at 3:30 p.m.) in Alamo Bowl history
"This year's game date is the perfect slot for the Valero Alamo Bowl's 20th Anniversary celebration," said Derrick Fox, Valero Alamo Bowl President/CEO. "Saturday kickoffs have delivered some of the best attended and most-watched games in our history and we hope this year's game will again provide lasting memories the fans and student-athletes will never forget."
