Weekly Swimming and Diving Awards Highlight Four Student-Athletes

Student-athletes from three league schools were recognized with swimming and diving weekly awards based on performances through Dec. 8. Bryce Bohman (WVU) was honored with the men’s swimming award while Michael Hixon (UT) garnered the diving accolade. On the women’s side Chelsie Miller (KU) was named the swimmer of the week while Emma Ivory-Ganja (UT) was awarded the diving honor. Miller picks up her first award of the season, while Bohman and Hixon both earned their second honors of the season and Ivory-Ganja received her third accolade.

Men’s Swimmer of the Week
Bryce Bohman, West Virginia, Sr., Moline, Ill.
Bohman scored the highlight win for WVU at the Mizzou Invite from Nov. 21-23 with a first place finish in the 100 back. His 46.40 time set a school record by over one second and set a 2013 national top time by .7 seconds. The senior also had two second place finishes in the 200 back (1:42.95) and 100 fly (48.29). He posted season-best times in all three individual events. In his relays, Bohman posted a solid 20.07 split in the 200 free relay which was part of the team’s first place finish. The teams posted season-best times in all four relay events.

Women’s Swimmer of the Week
Chelsie Miller, Kansas, So., Houston, Texas
Miller finished second in the 400-yard individual medley at the 2013 AT&T USA Winter National Championships in Knoxville, Tenn., after she swam an in-season best time of 4:08.86, the fastest in the Big 12 this season. She shaved off four seconds from her preliminary race (4:12.49) and 12 seconds from her in-season best time set just two weeks prior at the Kansas Classic (Nov. 22). Miller also posted a break-out performance in the 200-yard butterfly, her time of 1:58.58 was good enough for 18th place, as she hit the qualifying standard for the NCAA Championships in March. Miller scored a total of 82 points at the Kansas Classic (Nov. 22). She led the 400-yard individual medley finals wire-to-wire, as she won with a time of 4:20.43, a full seven seconds faster than the field.

Men’s Diver of the Week
Michael Hixon, Texas, Fr., Amherst, Mass.
Hixon won the 21-diver one-meter event at the UT Diving Invitational, which featured divers from California, Miami (Fla.), Arizona State, Hawaii, Wisconsin and TCU.  Hixon topped his nearest competitor by nearly 15 points.  The freshman won the 22-diver three-meter event with 453.35 points and outdistanced his nearest competitor by over 20 points.

Women’s Diver of the Week
Emma Ivory-Ganja, Texas, Jr., The Woodlands, Texas
Ivory-Ganja won the 19-diver three-meter event with a season-best 362.55 at the UT Diving Invitational, which featured divers from Miami (Fla.), Hawaii, Arizona State, Wisconsin, California and TCU.  She placed fourth in the 21-diver one-meter event and was UT’s second-best finisher in that event and the 13-diver platform event, where she placed fourth with 280.40 points.
