K-State Starts Quick In Victory Over Baylor
May 21, 2009
OKLAHOMA CITY Fourth-seeded Kansas State charged to an early lead for a 9-4 win over No. 8 seed Baylor in the second day of pool play games on Thursday night at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark.

Justin Bloxom led the way for the Wildcats, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. The junior blasted a solo home run, his ninth of the season, in the top of the ninth to cap the KSU effort.

A.J. Morris earned the win with 6.2 innings of work, striking out seven batters and improving to 13-1 on the season. He is now tied for fifth place on the Big 12 single-seasons wins list. Willie Kempf (4-5) was charged with the loss after going four innings and giving up five runs on seven hits.

Dustin Dickerson was Baylor’s top producer on offense, as he went 3-for-5 with a run scored on the day and extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Joey Hainsfurther was also 2-for-4 and added a pair of scores.

Kansas State jumped to a 2-0 lead with four hits in the first, with Adam Muenster starting off with a single to center. After a Nick Martini double to move Muenster into scoring position, Bloxom capitalized and singled to left to clear the bases.

Baylor was held scoreless until the bottom of the third, when Shaver Hansen singled in Hainsfurther from third to put the Bears on the board.

KSU was quick to answer in the top of the fourth, piling on three runs on a pair of hits. Drew Biery singled through the left side, then stole second before Jordan Cruz walked. Rob Vaughn dropped a single into centerfield to score Biery, and Dane Yelovich reached on a fielder’s choice to bring Vaughn across. Jordan Cruz then cruised home on a throwing error, making it 5-1.

Both teams were quiet until the seventh inning, when K-State tacked on another pair of runs. Martini singled to left and stole second, and Bloxom walked to put a second runner on base. Jason King then sent a screaming triple into right, plating both Martini and Bloxom to extend the lead to 7-1.

In the bottom of the seventh, Hainsfurther reached on an infield single up the middle, followed by a single through the right side for Dickerson. Raynor Campbell drew a walk to load the bases, and the three baserunners advanced on a wild pitch, with Hainsfurther scoring BU’s first run in four innings.

Dickerson scored on a groundout by Aaron Miller, and Campbell tallied another run on a wild pitch. KSU’s Evan Marshall then entered the game in relief for the starter Morris, promptly striking out Don Lambert to cap the rally at three runs on three hits and keep the game at a manageable 7-4.

The Wildcats added one run in both the eighth and ninth innings, first with Muenster hitting a sacrifice fly to bring in Rob Vaughn. In the top of the ninth, Bloxom smashed a solo shot to right, with the ball bouncing over the outside wall, which sealed the win at 9-4.

Baylor faces No. 5 Kansas in the final round of pool play games at 9 a.m. on Saturday while Kansas State will see top-seeded Texas at 12:30 p.m.
