March 19, 2011
The 11th-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers captured their ninth overall Big 12 Gymnastics Championship, snapping a streak of three-straight crowns by the Sooners, to edge OU by .275 points Saturday at the Hearnes Center in Columbia, Mo.

Nebraska finished with a total score of 196.775, while OU scored 196.500. Iowa State took third (195.150) and Missouri fourth (194.975).

Nebraska led through all rotations to earn its first crown since 2007. The Huskers topped the vault, bars and floor events and were paced by senior Erin Davis, who entered the meet No. 1 nationally on vault. Davis held true to the rank, taking the event title with a score of 9.925, while also claiming the floor crown with a mark of 9.900. Her 9.925 vault score is the highest in the event since 2005. Maria Scaffidi captured the individual bars title to give NU three total en route to their team crown.

The Huskers tallied 10 top four event finishers, while OU recorded nine. The Huskers had three top finishers on vault, bars and floor while the Sooners finished with three of the top four marks on beam.

Oklahoma recorded its fourth-straight beam title as Megan Ferguson and Natahsa Kelley both hit 9.925. In the all-around, Missouri's Mary Burke took top honors with a final mark of 39.300.

At the conclusion of the meet, the Conference also announced the annual awards as determined by a pre-championship vote of the league's head coaches.

Iowa State's Michelle Browning earned Gymnast of the Year honors, while true freshman Michelle Shealy was recognized as the Newcomer of the Year.

Nebraska's Davis earned the inaugural Event Specialist of the Year award, while Husker head coach Dan Kendig was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year for the seventh time in his career.

The All-Big 12 Championship team was selected at the conference championship, which included the top four finishers plus ties from each event and the all-around competition.

The Championship will be tape-delayed on FSN on Sunday. The announcement of the NCAA Regional fields will be on Monday, March 21, 2011.
