Iowa State and Oklahoma, along with four West Virginia student-athletes, will compete Saturday, April 5, in the regionals of the National Collegiate Women’s Gymnastics Championship.
The second-ranked Sooners garnered the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Minneapolis Regional which takes place at the Sports Pavilion at 6 p.m. CT. The Sooners will compete against No. 11 Illinois, No. 14 Minnesota, California, Southern Utah and San Jose State.
Oklahoma is led by Big 12 Coach of the Year K.J. Kindler who guided the Sooners to a three-peat Big 12 Championship on March 22. OU sophomore Haley Scaman, the Big 12 Gymnast of the Year, will look to continue her dominant season after placing second or better in three events at the conference championship.
Iowa State will travel to Baton Rouge, La., to face No. 3 LSU, No. 10 Stanford, Auburn, Arizona and Kent State at 4 p.m. CT. The Cyclones are coming off their best meet of the season at Big 12 Championships, where they scored a 196.650 to take second place.
Individually, West Virginia will send Hope Sloanhoffer and Nicolette Swoboda as all-around competitors, while Beth Deal will compete on the balance beam and Alexa Goldberg will be on the uneven bars. The quartet will travel to the Athens Regional to compete inside Stegeman Coliseum in Athens, Ga, at 3 p.m. CT.
The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships in Birmingham, Ala., April 18-20, hosted by the University of Alabama and the Alabama Sports Foundation.In addition, the event winners at each regional site will advance to the national championships (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or an all-around qualifier.
