Seniors Tia Brooks (Oklahoma) and Erik Kynard (Kansas State) have earned Big 12 Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors for competition Jan. 18-20. It is the second weekly honor for both student-athletes.
Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Male Athlete of the Week
Erik Kynard, Kansas State, Sr., Toledo, Ohio
Olympic silver medalist Erik Kynard made his return to the runway on Saturday as he flew over the bar at 2.29 meters (7 feet 6 inches). That jump is the highest in the NCAA this season and sets a new standard for a collegiate dual meet. The Wildcat Invitational was scored as a triple dual meet with Oklahoma State, Tulsa and UMKC, and his leap of 2.29 meters is a dual meet record. Kynard was the only competitor left when he entered the contest at 2.13 meters easily clearing on his first attempt. He also soared over the bar on first attempts at 2.18 meters and 2.23 meters before making 2.29 on his third attempt. After clearing that height, he thanked a large crowd for coming to watch he and his teammates in what very likely was his last competition at a home meet as a Wildcat.
Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Female Athlete of the Week
Tia Brooks, Oklahoma, Sr., Grand Rapids, Mich.
The defending national champion in the indoor and outdoor shot put, Brooks has now won five straight shot put events after she dominated the field at the J.D. Martin Invitational with a 2013 collegiate-leading mark of 61-6¾ (18.76m) to win the event by nearly 12½ feet, giving her the third-best mark in the world for 2013. Her performance marked the first collegiate throw farther than 60 feet this season, and leads the second-best throw in the country by more than four feet. Her non-winning throw of 57-9¾ still would have been enough to lead the country. The mark was both a J.D. Martin Invitational and Mosier track record. Brooks was also named the Division I Women's National Athlete of the Week by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) for her outstanding performance.
