AUSTIN, TX - The Texas women's team added to its first place lead, while the Texas men jumped into the top spot in the team standings after the second day of action at the 2013 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships in the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
On the women's side, Rachael Burnett grabbed West Virginia's first win of the meet, smashing the Big 12 Championship record in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:38.40. UT took over from there as Skylar Smith won the 200 IM (1:57.12). For the second year in a row, Ellen Lobb of Texas took home the 50 freestyle crown, winning with a time of 22.27. Lobb also anchored the Longhorn relay team with Sarah Denninghoff, Laura Sogar and Gretchen Jaques to claim the 400 medley relay crown (3:42.92).
UT also got a big points boost from the women's 1-meter dive as Texas took the top three spots. Maren Taylor won the event with a score of 323.20, marking her third league title in as many diving events.
WVU women sit in second place with 253 points. TCU is in third, with Iowa State and Kansas in fourth and fifth, respectively.
For the men, Texas maintained its lead, taking three-of-four events contested on the second day. Longhorn Michael McBroom nabbed is second career Big 12 crown, winning the 500 freestyle in 4:14.42. UT's Austin Kurhoff followed that up with a win 200 IM in an NCAA 'A' qualifying time of 1:43.59 while Charlie Moore took home the title in the 50 freestyle (19.73). West Virginia then picked up its first men's victory of the meet as the team of Andrew Marsh, Christopher Brill, Julien Vialette and Nathan Cobbe won the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:17.99.
WVU sits in second with 253 points, while TCU is third with 204.
The championships resume Friday with prelims at 10 a.m. The men's three-meter diving finals begin at 5 p.m., while swimming finals kick off at 6 p.m.
