Tanner Witt (K-State), Harrison Musgrave (West Virginia) and Jacob Evans (Oklahoma) are Big 12 baseball weekly award recipients for games played March 18-24.
Witt earns the Player of the Week distinction, while Musgrave claims WVU’s first-ever Pitcher of the Week honor and Evans claimed the Newcomer of the Week accolade.
It is the first career honor for all three student-athletes.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Tanner Witt, K-State, Sr., OF, Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich HS
Witt led K-State to four wins last week, including a sweep of perennial NCAA Regional participant Bethune-Cookman, as he hit .500 (8-for-16) with a double, six RBI, four runs scored, three walks and one hit-by-pitch. Witt, who recorded three multi-hit games and a .500 on-base percentage during the week, also registered four sacrifice flies to push his season total to a Big 12-leading six.
On Tuesday, Witt went 2-for-4 with a RBI. The next day, Witt registered his fourth save of the year by successfully working around a leadoff double. Witt also recorded two hits and drove in a pair of runs in the first game against Bethune-Cookman, while he followed that with a season-high tying three hits in the second game of the series. During the week, Witt raised his season average by 40 points and is now tied for first in the Big 12 with four saves.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Harrison Musgrave, West Virginia, So., LHP, Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport High
Musgrave picked up his second consecutive Big 12 win last Friday in a 2-0 victory over Texas Tech. The sophomore fanned a career-high 13 in 6.2 innings, allowing no runs on two hits. In his two Big 12 wins (K-State, Texas Tech), Musgrave is 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA in 13.0 innings allowing two runs on four hits with 19 strikeouts. Musgrave’s 13 strikeouts were the most in the Big 12 this season and the most by a WVU pitcher since March 2004. Prior to the win, TTU had a streak of 76 consecutive league road games with at least one run scored.
NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
Jacob Evans, Oklahoma, Fr., LHP, 6-2, Broken Arrow, Okla./Broken Arrow
For the week, Evans pitched 8.2 innings of scoreless relief with nine strikeouts. He nailed down his fourth save of the season with 1.2 scoreless frames of work Saturday against TCU, bailing the Sooners out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning to preserve OU’s 3-1 lead. On Sunday, he tossed two scoreless frames and earned the pitching victory to improve to 4-0 on the season. He has not surrendered a run in each of his last 10 appearances out of the bullpen.
