Big 12 Announces 2013 Academic At-Large Team

Thirty-one student-athletes have been named to the 2013 Academic All-Big 12 At-Large Team, the Conference announced. The squad recognizes the academic accomplishments of student-athletes at Conference institutions that participate in sports outside of Big 12 competition. The sports included for the 2012-13 season are acrobatics & tumbling, men’s gymnastics, men’s soccer and rifle. Baylor placed nine members from its acrobatics & tumbling squad, while six Oklahoma men’s gymnasts earned honors. TCU’s rifle team includes nine honorees while West Virginia also had eight members between its rifle and men’s soccer squads.

Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services, the academic at-large squad consisted of 25 first team members combined with six individuals on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
