Kansas, Kansas State Women Advance on Day One of Big 12 Championships

Kansas and Kansas State opened the 2014 Big 12 Championship with wins at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth. The seventh-seeded Wildcats bested No. 10 West Virginia, 4-0, while the eighth-seeded Jayhawks defeated No. 9 Iowa State, 4-1.

K-State (10-12) secured the doubles point for the second straight match with wins at number three and two doubles. The Wildcats are 8-2 this season when they capture the doubles point.

In singles, the Wildcats secured a quick 2-0 lead as Cirnu was the beneficiary of a retirement due to injury by Toidze at number five singles. Senior Petra Niedermayerova pushed K-State into a 3-0 lead with a straight set win at number one singles. The clinching match point on Thursday came from Panaite at number three singles. The freshman from Velika, Croatia, captured her second straight win with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Manole.

Kansas (12-11) claimed the doubles point with wins at number one and three doubles. At number one, Dylan Windom and Paulina Los narrowly escaped the Cyclones, 8-7.

Ksenia Pronina defeated Kansas' Dylan Windom at the number one spot, 6-1, 6-2, giving the Cyclones the first singles point. Los defeated Emma Waites 6-3, 6-1 to put the Jayhawks up 2-1. Belen Luduena bested the Cyclone's Meghan Cassens 6-2, 6-2 while Nastya Trubich clinched the match for the Jayhawks at the number five spot defeating Talisa Merchiers 6-4, 6-3.

Championship action continues on Friday for the women with four quarterfinal matchups. The league's men's squads open tournament play tomorrow with two quarterfinal matches. Matches will begin at 9 a.m. CT.
