Oklahoma, the defending Big 12 tournament champion, will open the 2014 Conference season as the league favorite in the Big 12 coaches’ poll. The Sooners were selected first for the second-consecutive season with four first place votes and 24 points. Baylor tallied two first-place votes, coming in second with 22 points. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team in the poll.
The Sooners are currently No. 3 in the nation and boast a 16-1 record. The lone loss of the season came at the hands of the UCLA Bruins at the ITA Team Indoor Championship in Houston, Texas, on February 15. Since the defeat, OU has won nine in a row, including six against opponents currently ranked in the top 25, highlighted by a victory over then-No. 1 Ohio State in Norman.
Baylor has five singles competitors ranked in the latest ITA rankings with Julian Lenz coming in at No. 8. The Bears have won six consecutive matches and are 10-0 in Waco this season. BU checked in at No. 6 in the latest ITA Team Rankings.
Texas (16-3) was picked to finish third with 17 points while Oklahoma State (17-2) was chosen fourth with 11 points. Texas Tech (10-5) and TCU (8-7) round out the poll tied for fifth with eight points each.
In addition to Oklahoma and Baylor’s top 10 rankings, the leagues four other teams all rank within the top 55. Texas currently sits at No. 11, Oklahoma State is No. 21, Texas Tech checks in at No. 29 while TCU was ranked No. 55 in the latest ITA team rankings.
