Seven Big 12 Tennis players advanced to the second round of the NCAA Singles Championships after picking up opening round victories on Wednesday. The league's participants went a combined 7-8 on the day.
On the men's side Baylor's 31st-ranked Diego Galeano triumphed in a three-set battle vs. No. 34 Mikelis Libietis of Tennessee to advance into the round of 32. After dropping the opening set, 7-6(3), Galeano responded to take sets two and three, 7-5 and 6-3, to claim the victory. Galeano improves to 29-12 on the season with win and moves on to face 38th-ranked Leandro Toledo of Minnesota on Thursday in the second round.
Oklahoma’s Dane Webb and Andrew Harris advanced to the round of 32 in the NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Championship. Webb, ranked No. 41 by the ITA, upset No. 19 Harrison Adams of Texas A&M in the first round, 6-0, 7-5, to move forward in the tournament. The junior, named to the All-Tournament Team at No. 3 singles, will face No. 11 Peter Kobelt of Ohio State in the second round.
Harris, ranked No. 53 in the nation, defeated No. 106 Henry Craig of Denver. The freshman moved on to the next round after a 0-6, 7-5, 6-3 win. He will face California’s Ben McLachlan, ranked No. 55, who upset No. 8 Jared Hiltzik of Illinois in the first round.
Texas junior Soren Hess-Olesen defeated San Diego's 58th-ranked Clarke Spinosa in straight sets (6-1, 6-4). Hess-Olesen advances to face East Carolina's 25th-ranked Joran Vliegen on Thursday. Hess-Olesen improves to 4-1 during his second appearance in NCAA singles postseason play. Last season he earned ITA All-America honors after advancing to the quarterfinals.
Making her school record fourth straight appearance at the NCAA Singles Championships, Kansas State senior Petra Niedermayerova battled to a three-set win over No. 45 ranked Lacey Smyth of Arizona, 7-5, 2-6, 7-5, in the first round of action. The senior improves her record to 5-3 in her NCAA Singles Championship appearances and advances to face UCLA’s Jennifer Brady.
Oklahoma State freshman Viktoriya Lushkova advanced to the round of 32. The 52nd-ranked freshman knocked off No. 42 Laura Antonana Iriarte of San Diego State, 6-2, 6-3, in her first career match at the tournament. The win was Lushkova's 18th of the year and sixth over a ranked opponent. Lushkova will face 14th-ranked Olivia Janowicz of Florida in the round of 32 on Thursday.
Texas All-America sophomore Breaunna Addison opened the 64-player singles draw with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Hawai'i's Cindy Nguyen Wednesday at the NCAA Championships. Addison advances to the tournament's round of 32 and will meet Notre Dame's 39th-ranked Quinn Gleason on Thursday at a time to be announced.
On the men's side, five of the Big 12's participants suffered losses. Baylor's duo of Julian Lenz and Patrick Pradella were both knocked off in the first round. TCU's Nick Chappell, Texas' Lloyd Glasspool and Texas Tech's Felipe Soares were all eliminated as well.
Three women's competitors were knocked out on Wednesday. Baylor's Kiah Generette and Jordaan Sanford both fell in addition to TCU's Stefanie Tan.
The seven remaining competitors will return to action in Athens on Thursday. In addition to the singles participants, six of the league's doubles squads will open championship play on Thursday. For live results, visit NCAA Championship Central.
