Kansas’ Kelsey Kessler and Iowa State’s Sarah Hawryluk have been named the Big 12 Pitcher and Player of the week for games April 4-7. The honor is the first for both players. Kessler becomes the first Jayhawk to win the award since 2008, while Hawryluk captures Iowa State’s first weekly award since the 2007 season.

Big 12 Player of the Week
Sarah Hawryluk, Iowa State, Jr., OF, Alberta, Canada
Hawryluk hit .600 (6-for-10) last weekend with a walk, four runs scored, two RBI and a perfect 4-for-4 mark in stolen bases as Iowa State swept the Oklahoma State Cowgirls. The series is Iowa State’s first sweep of a conference foe since 2010 and the first since the Big 12 moved to the three-game format in 2012.

Hawryluk had one hit Friday, three Saturday and two Sunday as the Cyclones built a three-game winning streak during conference play for the first time since 2009. In Sunday’s game, Hawryluk stole her 15th and 16th bases of the season, ranking her seventh in Iowa State history for stolen bases in a season. The junior is currently sixth in the Big 12 in steals this season and ranks sixth in conference play with seven hits combined against Baylor and Oklahoma State.

Big 12 Pitcher of the Week
Kelsey Kessler, Kansas, Fr., RHP, Blue Springs, Mo.
In three appearances last weekend against Texas Tech, Kessler recorded her first career save in game one, posted a complete game shutout in game two and became the first Jayhawk to throw a no-hitter since 2007 in the series finale.

In the series opener, Kessler was called in after the Red Raiders rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth. She got two quick outs to end the sixth and shook off a leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh to clinch the save.

Game two saw Kessler strand eight Red Raiders – including runners on third base in both the first and fourth innings – en route to her third complete game shutout of the year. She scattered four hits over seven innings, struck out four and retired 10-straight batters to end the game.

Her most impressive performance came at the end of the weekend. The freshman started the game sitting the Texas Tech lineup down in order through the first three innings, totaling 19-consecutive outs dating back to the second game of the series. A walk and a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the fourth ended up being all that separated Kessler from a perfect game as she went on to retire the next 11 in a row to give KU its first no-hitter in six years.
