A total of 113 Big 12 student-athletes will compete in the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 5-8.
The league enters the Championship with five men’s and four women’s teams ranked in the USTFCCCA Top 25. The Kansas women come into the event as the top-ranked team in the nation. The Jayhawks are followed by Texas in the No. 12 spot while Iowa State come in at No. 15. Texas Tech rounds out the group of women’s squads coming in 17th.
For the men, Texas sits eighth to lead the conference. TCU (No. 12) and Kansas (No. 15) complete the league teams in the top 15, while Oklahoma State and Kansas State join the list at 17th and 25th, respectively.
Kansas looks to claim its first NCAA crown after finishing second at the indoor championships in March. The Jayhawk women are coming off a Big 12 season sweep, winning both the indoor and outdoor titles for the first time in school history. KU will be represented by 13 women’s entries at the NCAA Championships, the fourth-most of all teams in the competition.
The Texas Tech men lead the league with a fifth-place showing at the NCAA Indoor Championships and will send nine athletes to Eugene. Texas tallied the most competitors on the men’s side with 15 total qualifiers in nine events.
The Texas women are the only Big 12 team to win a NCAA outdoor title, capturing the honor four times (1998, ‘99, 2005, ‘06). No current league member has won a men’s outdoor crown.
In individual events, the league has recorded a total of 62 women’s titles, along with 48 for the men.
