Texas Leads Weekly Swimming and Diving Honors

Three upperclassmen and one freshman received Big 12 swimming and diving weekly honors for competition through Sunday, Dec. 9. Michael McBroom (Texas) was honored with the men's swimming award and Richard Pokorny (West Virginia) received the diving accolade. On the women's side, Laura Sogar (Texas) earned swimmer of the week, while Elyse Brouillette (Iowa State) garnered the diver award. This is the first career recognition for McBroom, Pokorny and Brouillette and the third for Sogar.

Men's Swimmer of the Week
Michael McBroom, Texas, Sr., The Woodlands, Texas
McBroom defeated loaded fields to win the 500 and 1,650 freestyle events at the USA Swimming Winter National Championships. McBroom automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 14:40.10, which cleared the NCAA "A" cut by over seven seconds. He nearly claimed an "A" cut in the 500 freestyle, but finished in a strong mid-season time of 4:16.08 to win the event in which he ran down Arizona's Matt Barber in the final 50 yards. McBroom will represent the U.S. later this week at the FINA Short Course World Championships in Turkey.

Women's Swimmer of the Week
Laura Sogar, Texas, Sr., Exeter, R.I.
Sogar swept the 100 and 200 breaststroke events in loaded fields at the USA Swimming Winter National Championships, and she re-wrote her school records in both events. She set meet and school records in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 58.32 to win the event. Sogar notched her second win in as many nights when she claimed the 200 breaststroke in 2:05.39 after setting meet and school records in the preliminary round with a time of 2:05.04. Sogar took over two seconds off her existing school record in the preliminary round.

Men's Diver of the Week
Richard Pokorny, West Virginia, Jr., East Concord, N.Y.
At the Miami Invitational, Pokorny recorded fifth-place finishes in both the 1-meter and the 3-meter events.

Women's Diver of the Week
Elyse Brouillette, Iowa State, Fr., Omaha, Neb.
Brouillette led the Cyclones at the Hawkeye Invitational with two sixth place finishes on both the platform and 3-meter boards. She also finished 20th on the 1-meter board. She led the Cyclones against Iowa with a second place finish on the 1-meter board and third place finish on the 3-meter board. Brouillette is currently leading the Cyclones on all three boards for the season. The freshman currently sits fourth in Iowa State history on both the 1-meter and platform board and sixth on the 3-meter board.
