Postseason Indoor Track & Field Awards Announced
March 06, 2013

The Big 12 Conference has announced its 2013 indoor track & field postseason honors, as selected by the league's head coaches.

Texas men's coach Bubba Thornton captured Coach of Year honors for the fifth time of his career and first since 2009. Thornton led the Longhorns to their sixth conference title at the indoor championships in February. Under Thornton, Texas is coming off a pair of top 10 showings at the NCAA Indoor Championships, including a seventh-place finish in 2012. On the women's side, Kansas coach Stanley Redwine won the award for the first time after leading the Jayhawks to their first conference championship in school history. The Jayhawks are currently the No. 2 team in the nation and will compete for a national championship this weekend after finishing second a year ago.

Patrick Casey (Oklahoma) took home men's outstanding performer of the year honors after winning three titles at the Big 12 indoor championships. The senior won the mile run with a time of 4:00.81, the 1,000 meter run and was part of the Sooners' first-place distance medley relay team. Casey was named the high-point scorer at last month's championships with a total of 22.5.

Iowa State senior Betsy Saina claimed the women's outstanding performer award for the second straight year. Saina took first place in the 5,000 meters for the third consecutive season as well as victories in the one mile run and 3,000 meters. She became the first Cyclone in school history to sweep the 5,000 and 3,000 meter runs in consecutive seasons.

Outstanding Freshman of the Year honors went to Kaitlin Petrillose (Texas) and Felix Obi (Baylor). Petrillose took home the pole vault title, the first ever by a Longhorn at the indoor conference meet in record-setting fashion.  Petrillose cleared 4.33 meters (14-2.5) to earn the victory, eclipsing her indoor personal best and bettering a school record that she previously broke on Jan. 25. Obi set the Baylor school record for a third time this season en route to winning the first men's triple jump title in school history, eclipsing the 53-foot mark for the first time in his career with a leap of 53-1. The freshman also posted a third-place finish in the long jump, setting a new career-best mark with a leap of 24-7.25.

The 2013 indoor season concludes with the NCAA Championships March 8-9 at Randal Tyson Track in Fayetteville, Ark.
