Okolo, Rodriguez Earn Track & Field Awards

For back-to-back weeks, Kansas State and Texas student-athletes claimed Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week honors. K-State’s Carlos Rodriguez earned the male accolade while Courtney Okolo was awarded the female athlete of the week.

Rodriguez registered two individual first-place finishes and helped earn the top spot in the 4x100m at Saturday’s Jim Click Shootout. The senior recorded a 10.38 wind-aided mark in the 100m and a K-State second-best all-time 200m time of 20.83. Rodriguez helped Tyris Jefferson, Ifeanyichukwu Otuonye and Magnus Scott Jr. capture the 4x100m with a time of 40.47. In all, Rodriguez finished the day with a men’s team high 30 points.

Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Female Athlete of the Week
Courtney Okolo, Texas, So., Carrollton, Texas
Okolo breezed to victory in the 400 meters during Saturday’s Texas Invitational in a nation-leading time of 51.36 seconds, ahead of teammate Briana Nelson who clocked the fourth-fastest time in the country (51.40).

The event marked the season debut for Okolo in the 400. She ran the second leg of the nation-leading 4x400-meter relay (3:26.38) two weeks ago at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. A five-time All-American, Okolo was fourth in the 400 at the 2014 NCAA Indoor Championships.
