Kansas’ Grace Morgan and Oklahoma State’s Luis Martinez earned the first Big 12 Runner of the Week honors of the 2014 season. It is the first time either runner, both of whom are freshmen, has earned a Big 12 weekly award.
Luis Martinez, Oklahoma State, Fr., Rio Rancho, N.M.
Martinez took first place in the four-mile race at the Hurricane Festival in Tulsa, Okla. with a time of 20:05. The appearance was only the second of his collegiate career after making one appearance during his redshirt season. Martinez’s win also marked the Cowboys’ fifth-consecutive individual title at the Hurricane Festival.
The Hurricane Festival featured stiff competition from Arkansas, Oklahoma, Tulsa, Wichita State and Louisiana-Monroe.
Grace Morgan, Kansas, Fr., Lawrence, Kansas
Morgan got her season off to a good start with her first-career victory as a Jayhawk at the Bob Timmons Classic on Saturday. The Lawrence native’s victory was never in doubt after she pulled away from the lead pack just over midway through the race and widened the gap between her and the rest of the field over the remaining 2,000 meters.
Morgan completed the 5K loop in 18:49.1, the fastest finish by a Jayhawk at the Bob Timmons Classic in four years. Her time was also just over 30 seconds faster than the runner-up, Oral Roberts’ Samantha Watson, who won the individual title at the same meet last year. Morgan’s performance also helped lead her Jayhawks to the team title with dual victories over Oral Roberts and UMKC.
