The Big 12 men's and women's cross country teams will compete at NCAA Regionals on Friday, November 9, for a chance to advance to the 2012 NCAA Championships in Louisville, Ky. The Conference has four men's and three women's teams ranked nationally heading into competition.
The South Central Regional will be held in Fayetteville, Ark., and will feature both the men's and women's teams from Baylor and Texas and the TCU women's squad . The women's 6K will begin at 11 a.m., with the men's 10K to follow at 12:15 p.m.
Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State will travel to Springfield, Mo., to participate in the Midwest Regional. The Cyclone women will look to defend their 2011 regional team title while the Oklahoma State men will go for their second consecutive regional title and seventh victory in eight years. The women's 6K is scheduled to begin at noon, and the men's 10K will start immediately after at 1:15 p.m. Texas Tech heads west to Fort Collins, Colo., for the Mountain Regional and the West Virginia women will compete in the Mid-Atlantic Regional in University Park, Pa.
In the latest edition of the USTFCCCA national rankings, No. 1 Oklahoma State leads the league on the men's side after winning its fifth straight Big 12 Championship title. The Cowboys are trailed by fifth-ranked Texas, eighth-ranked Oklahoma and 29th-ranked Kansas. Big 12 Champion and second-ranked Iowa State is the front-runner for the women. Oklahoma State and Texas round out the Big 12 women's squads coming in 21st and 22nd, respectively.
The NCAA Cross Country Championships will be held Saturday, Nov. 17, at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. The top two teams from each regional earn automatic bids to the event, and the top four runners not associated with qualifying teams will advance as individuals. Additional teams and individuals are chosen through an at-large selection process.
