Baylor women’s tennis sophomore Ema Burgic was named the 2013 Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s National Player to Watch on Wednesday in a ceremony on the campus of the University of Illinois, in conjunction with the NCAA Division I Team Championships.
In her second season at BU, Burgic racked up a 25-5 dual-match record and ended the season on a 17-match win streak with all of those contests coming at the No. 1 singles position. Overall, Burgic tallied a 42-8 record on the season and 24-6 mark against ranked opponents. Her 42 wins are the fourth-most in a single season in school history.
The 10th-ranked Lukavac, Bosnia & Herzegovina-native was named the Big 12 Player of the Year and the ITA Texas Region Player to Watch earlier this month. Winning the ITA’s regional award made Burgic one of 12 players in the country eligible for the national honor.
Burgic is also ranked No. 4 in the country in doubles with partner Victoria Kisialeva, a redshirt freshman. The duo had a 19-3 record on court 1 and a 25-3 mark overall. The BU tandem was 8-2 in its last 10 decisions, including six straight wins.
