Five Big 12 Athletes Receive Academic All-America Honors

Five Big 12 student-athletes have earned a place on the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Men's and Women's At-Large Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Big 12 schools have now had over 500 Academic All-Americans over the 16 history of the Conference.

Fresh off helping his team to the NCAA Championship, Texas men's golfer Dylan Fritteli was the lone honoree on the men's side. The senior grabbed third team accolades with a 3.35 GPA, while majoring in geography.

The sport of women's swimming registered two second team members as Karlee Bispo (Texas) and Alyssa Conner (Texas A&M) were recognized. Bispo, the Big 12 200-yard individual medley champion, is majoring in Exercise Science with a 3.35 GPA. She was also on last year's Academic All-America team. Conner is a marketing major with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

In gymnastics, Oklahoma senior Megan Ferguson earned a spot on the second team. This season, she won the Big 12 Championship on both bars and beam and was one of six finalists for the AAI Award for Outstanding Senior Gymnast. The Olathe, Kan.-native has 3.65 GPA as an advertising major.

On the third team, Texas Tech women's golfer Kim Kaufman became the first Lady Raider to be named an Academic All-American. The juunior finished tied for eighth at the NCAA Championships and received the NCAA Elite ‘89 prior to the event for having the highest GPA (4.00) of anyone in the field. She is a politcial science major.

The Capital One Academic All-America® Men's At-Large program includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo and wrestling.

The Capital One Academic All-America® Women's At-Large program includes the sports of bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis and water polo.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
