LAWRENCE, Kan. - After recording a 24-stroke improvement from round one to round two, the Oklahoma Sooners claimed the lead at the 2012 Big 12 Women's Golf Championship at the Lawrence Country Club's par-70, 6,038-yard course.
The Sooners fired a plus-36 on Friday, but moved from fourth to first with a plus-12 second round score of 292. The score is just one stroke shy of the fifh-lowest single round score at the event (291; Missouri, 2011 & Oklahoma State, 2006). OU has a two-day total of 608.
Day one leader Iowa State, which has sunk just five birdies over the two rounds, is in second with a score of 613, five strokes behind the Sooners. ISU, along with BU, shot a 302 second round. The Cyclones hold a two-stroke lead on the Bears, who have a combined score of 615. Oklahoma State sits in a close fourth, one stroke behind Baylor and eight strokes behind leader OU at 616.
For the second-straight day, Oklahoma was led by Chirapat Jao-Javanil, who was one of two golfers to shoot an even round two score of 70. Combined with her plus-five 75 score in round one, she maintains her first place standing on the individual leader board. The sophomore tallied four birdies today for a total of eight over 36 holes. Teammate Anne Tanguay is in third place with a plus-eight 148 score after carding a 72 today.
Hayley Davis (Baylor), who shared the first-place lead with Jao-Javanil after round one, sits in second place. The freshman had three birdies today as part of her plus-two score of 72.
There were stroke improvements from round one to today for all 10 teams with Kansas' 31-stroke improvement the best on the day. Reigning champion Texas had a 21-stroke improvement to move from eighth to sixth.
Nicole Vandermade (Texas) recorded the first under-par score of the event, shooting a one-under 69 after posting a first round score of 85 (+11) for a 16-stroke improvement for the senior. After 11 bogeys yesterday, Vandermade shot even on all holes except for a birdie on hole 9, to finish in a tie for fifth individually.
Along with Jao-Javanil, Jayde Panos (Oklahoma State) shot an even par 70 with three birdies, including back-to-back ones on holes 11 and 12. The sophomore shot a plus-10 on Friday's opening round. She sits in a tie for fifth with Vandermade and two others at a plus-10 score of 150.
Baylor, Iowa State, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State each have two golfers in the top 10.
The final round begins on Sunday at 8 a.m. The top six teams will tee off entirely from hole 1 with the final golfer teeing off at 9:52 a.m. Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri and Texas Tech will start at hole 10. The awards ceremony will follow the conclusion of the third round.
