Mikkelsen and Maggio Tally Final Big 12 Monthly Golfer Awards
May 02, 2012

Fresh off first place finishes at last week's Big 12 Golf Championships, Joakim Mikkelsen (Baylor) and Mary Michael Maggio (Texas A&M) have earned Big 12 Golfer of the Month honors for April.

The BU linkster garners his second career award, after also picking up the distinction in February. Mikkelsen becomes the first Bear to receive two Big 12 monthly awards in one year since Ryan Baca accomplished the feat in 2006. Maggio takes home her first Big 12 monthly accolade and the first by a Texas A&M female since Julia Boland won the honor in November of 2009.

Joakim Mikkelsen, Baylor, Sr., Drammen, Norway
Mikkelsen punctuated a string of top-20 finishes during the month of April by winning the 2012 Big 12 Championship with a 3-under 285 for the four-round event. The senior erased a seven-stroke deficit in the final round to win by two strokes, becoming just the second BU golfer to win the Big 12 title. The finish at Whispering Pines in Trinity earned Mikkelsen Big 12 All-Tournament Team honors, the first by a Baylor golfer since 2009. Earlier in the month, the Bear finished tied for 14th (2-under 214) at The Woodlands All-American Intercollegiate and tied for 20th (12-over 228) at The Aggie Invitational. In April, the Drammen, Norway-native turned in a stroke average of 72.70, while helping his team to finishes of fifth (The Woodlands), seventh (Aggie) and fifth (Big 12). Mikkelsen now has six top-five finishes this season, matching his career total for the first three seasons. He ranks third in Baylor history with 12 top-5 and 19 top-10 finishes.

Mary Michael Maggio, Texas A&M, Jr., Conway, Ark.
Maggio tallied her first collegiate win by firing a 9-over 219 at the Big 12 Women's Golf Championship in Lawrence, Kan. Her score improved each round as she went 77-73-69 over the 54-hole event. By carding a 69 in the final round, Maggio notched one of only two rounds under par by the field. It was her lowest round of the season and the second-lowest single-round score in a conference championship by an Aggie in program history. The junior is just the fourth Aggie player to win an Big 12 invidual title.
