Big 12 Cross Country Teams Set to Compete at NCAA Regionals

The Big 12 men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete at NCAA Regionals Friday, Nov. 15, for a chance to advance to the 2013 NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. The conference has three men’s and two women’s teams ranked nationally heading into competition.

The Midwest Regional will be hosted by Iowa State at the Iowa State Cross Country Course. The meet will feature both the men’s and women’s teams from Iowa State, Kansas, K-State, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. The men’s 10k race will begin at 12 p.m., with the women’s 6k race to follow at 1:15 p.m. The OSU men will try to continue their dominance and bring home an eighth regional champion trophy in nine years.

Texas will travel to Waco, Texas as Baylor hosts the South Central Regional. The Texas men will go for their third-straight regional championship. The men’s race will kick off the day at 10 a.m., followed by the women’s event at 11:15 a.m. Texas Tech heads west to Ogden, Utah, for the Mountain Regional and the West Virginia women will compete in the Mid-Atlantic Regional in Bethlehem, Pa.

In the latest USTFCCCA national rankings, No. 3 Oklahoma State leads the league on the men’s side after winning a sixth-consecutive Big 12 Championship title. The Cowboys are trailed by No. 24 Iowa State and No. 25 Texas. Big 12 Champion and seventh-ranked Iowa State is the front-runner for the women. West Virginia rounds out the Big 12 women’s squads coming in at No. 24.

The NCAA Cross Country Championships will be held Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, Ind. The top two teams from each regional earn automatic bids to the event, and the top four runners not associated with qualifying teams will advance as individuals. Additional teams and individuals are chosen through an at-large selection process.
