Longhorns and Cyclones Claim Final Swimming and Diving Weekly Awards
February 12, 2014

Texas and Iowa State claimed the final weekly swimming and diving awards of the 2013-14 season for competition from Jan. 23 through Feb. 9. John Murray (UT) was honored with the men’s swimming award while Will Chandler (UT) garnered the diving accolade. On the women’s side, Amanda Paulson (ISU) was named the swimmer of the week while Maren Taylor (UT) was awarded the diving honor for the third-consecutive week.

This week’s award marks the 10th for Taylor, fourth for Chandler and the first for Murray and Paulson.

Men’s Swimmer of the Week
John Murray, Texas, So., San Antonio, Texas
Murray won an individual event and helped UT to two relay wins in the third-ranked Longhorns' win at No. 5 Arizona.  Murray took on Arizona’s traditionally strong sprint group and claimed the 50 freestyle in 20.51.  His anchor of 44.28 helped UT win the 400 medley relay, and he closed the meet by leading off UT’s victorious 400 freestyle relay in 45.30.

Women’s Swimmer of the Week
Amanda Paulson, Iowa State, Jr., Monticello, Minn.
Two-time ISU most valuable swimmer, Paulson, claimed three first-place finishes on Friday and Saturday for the Cyclones against conference rival Kansas. Her second-place finish in the 200 medley relay was the first time she hasn’t won her event in dual meet competition since Nov. 1, 2013. Paulson was a part of 33 of the Cyclones' 163 points over the two-day event. The school record holder in the 50 freestyle notched her 25th career first-place finish in her signature event with a time of 23.13.

Men’s Diver of the Week
Will Chandler, Texas, Jr., Waco, Texas
Chandler tamed the cold and windy conditions at Arizona’s outdoor pool and won the seven-diver one-meter event (featuring four Arizona divers) by over 16 points.  Chandler returned to place third in the three-meter event with 387.60 points, less than 10 points behind top finisher and teammate Michael Hixon.

Women’s Diver of the Week
Maren Taylor, Texas, Sr., Arlington, Va.
Taylor swept the one- and three-meter boards in UT’s win at Arizona. Despite cold and windy conditions at Arizona’s outdoor pool, Taylor handily won the three-meter board with 356.70 points and outdistanced her nearest competitor by over 50 points.  The FINA World Championships finalist also won the nine-diver one-meter event with 315.60 points.
