After two days of play in Fort Worth at the 2014 Big 12 Tennis Championships, the semifinal matchups have been set at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. Baylor, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Tech advanced on the women's side while Baylor, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas will compete on the men's side tomorrow.
The first-seeded Baylor Lady Bears (22-6) opened Championship play with a 4-0 shutout of No. 8 Kansas. Baylor took the doubles point after wins at No. 1 and No. 2. In singles, Kiah Generette recorded a quick 6-0, 6-1 victory over Dylan Windom at the No. 1 spot. Alex Leatu followed with a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 5 over Nastya Trubich. Ema Burgic clinched the match for the Lady Bears as she downed Cardon, 6-2, 6-2 on court two.
The No. 4 Texas Tech Lady Raiders (17-7) topped No. 5 Oklahoma, 4-2. TTU picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take the first point of the match. Lynn Kiro, Nikki Sanders and Samantha Adams all picked up singles wins for the Lady Raiders. Kiro tied a school record picking up her 16th straight win when she knocked off Oklahoma's Mia Lancaster.
The second-seeded Oklahoma State Cowgirls (14-7) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, as the Cowgirls secured wins at number one and three doubles to clinch the point against No. 7 K-State. The Cowgirls would go on to pick up wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 in singles play to complete the 4-0 shutout.
In the final women's match of the day, No. 3 Texas (12-11) took down host TCU, 4-2. In doubles, TCU took the point winning at No. 1 and No. 3. In singles play, Texas picked up wins at No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 to clinch the match, 4-0. In a battle of top 40 opponents, Texas' Breaunna Addison (#15) knocked off TCU's 38th ranked Stefanie Tan at the No. 1 spot, 6-3, 6-3.
The No. 5 Oklahoma State Cowboys (21-6) opened the Big 12 Championship with a 4-3 comeback win over Texas Tech. OSU took an early 1-0 lead after doubles but the Red Raiders came storming back in singles play to even the score. With the match tied at three, Lucas Gerch roared back from a 5-0 third-set deficit to win seven-consecutive games and guide the fifth-seeded Cowboys over TTU. The victory was OSU’s first at the Big 12 Championships since topping Texas Tech in 2009 by the same 4-3 margin.
No. 3 Oklahoma (22-2) notched a 4-2 victory over TCU. TCU took the doubles point, taking down the Sooners on courts one and three. Senior Guillermo Alcorta and sophomore Axel Alvarez won the only doubles match for the Sooners with an 8-7 victory on court two. Axel Alvarez, Dane Webb, Austin Siegel and Alex Ghilea picked up singles victories for the Sooners propelling OU to the quarterfinal victory.
Both men’s semifinal matches will begin at Noon CT, while the women’s action is slated to start at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
