2013-14 Male Sportsperson of the Year Nominees Announced

The Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year Awards began in 2000-01 to annually recognize student-athletes who displayed an extraordinary degree of sportsmanship and/or community service during the academic year. A male and female are honored each year.

The following student-athletes have been nominated for 2013-14 Big 12 Male Sportsperson of the Year. Criteria for the award includes examples of sportsmanship and ethical conduct, citizenship and academic achievement. The two winners will be named on Thursday.

Bryce Petty
Baylor, Jr, Football
*Active in Big Brothers, Big Sisters and leads a bible study for a group of 15 Baylor students while participating in FCA.
*Speaks with youth groups around Texas about the importance of staying in school and sportsmanship.
* Academic All-Big 12 selection who is currently working on his master's degree.
*Traveled to Kenya on a mission trip with other Baylor student-athletes in May 2011.

Jeff Woody
Iowa State, Sr, Football
*Selected to be one of four students on the VEISHEA Task Force, a campus initiative formed by Iowa State's president.
*On track to graduate in December of 2014 with a master's degree in the Biomedical Science program.
*Community service includes Soles4Souls, Cy Cans, ISU Blood Drive and visiting patients at Mary Greeley Hospital.
*Academic All-Big 12 First Team and Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarship recipient.

JaCorey Shepherd
Kansas, Jr, Football
*An active member of Big Brothers/Big Sisters with a little brother, Christopher, through the program.
*Attended the 2013 Big 12 Conference Leadership Summit and selected to the Kansas Football leadership council.
*Volunteers at local elementary schools as a reader/mentor and has participated in football clinics with the special needs community and local school children.
*Academic All-Big 12 Second Team.

Ryan Mueller
Kansas State, Jr, Football
*Befriended a nine-year-old boy, Kaiden Schroeder who suffers from Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia and has been in constant contact with him.
*Kaiden was invited to both the 2013 Oklahoma game and the 2014 Purple/White Spring Game in which he was able to run a play and score a touchdown in the third quarter.
*Visits retirement homes and involved with Cats in the Classroom.

Gabe Ikard
Oklahoma, Sr, Football
*A leader and constant voice for the 2013 Sooners throughout the season that resulted in a Sugar Bowl win.
*Helped with relief efforts after tornadoes ripped through Oklahoma in May 2013 and participated in a 2012 mission trip to Haiti.
*2013 Wuerffel Trophy Winner given for excellence in academic, athletic and community service achievement.
*Capital One Academic All-American of the Year, NFF Scholar-Athlete Award and Hampshire Honor Society among academic honors.

Chris Perry
Oklahoma State, Sr, Wrestling
*Known for his unselfishness as he is always the first to credit and help teammates while paying respects to his competitors.
*Coached youth wrestlers through the Cowboy Wrestling Club.
*Participated on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Harvest II food drive and volunteered at local elementary schools.
*2014 Big 12 Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year and NWCA All-Academic Team.

Dylan Fitzgerald
TCU, Sr, Baseball
*Has formed a special bond with a five-year-old, Micah, who has battled Neuroblastoma for most of his life through an organization called Team IMPACT. The entire baseball team has welcomed Micah as part of the program.
*Actively involved in all of the baseball team's community service projects, including a Women's Clinic the team hosts to raise money for breast cancer awareness.
*Academic All-Big 12 Team and District VII Academic All-District First Team.

John Curtiss
Texas, So, Baseball
*Battled back from two major surgeries following his freshman season that sidelined him for the following season. After serving as a starting pitcher as a freshman, returned this season and took over the closer's role because it was best for the team.
*NCAA Elite 89 Award winner for academic excellence, Academic All-Big 12 First Team and Capital One Academic All-America First Team.
*Academic mentor in the Student Services office at UT and member of the Liberal Arts Honors Student Council.
*Community service includes Marathon Kids, Longhorn Halloween and Marbridge Foundation.

Thomas Kyanko
West Virginia, Jr, Rifle
*Known for being the first student-athlete in the range and last to leave.
*Overcame an accidental kicking by a teammate during a match this year to end the day with a high score.
*Visits the WVU Children's Hospital and local elementary schools where he instructs students on the safety and excitement around the sport of rifle.
*Academic All-Big 12 At-Large Team and Capital One Academic All-America At-Large Third Team.
