May 23, 2009
OKLAHOMA CITY Big 12 regular season champion Texas posted a 4-2 win over No. 4 seed Kansas State on Saturday afternoon at the 2009 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. With the victory, the top-seeded Longhorns advanced to Sunday’s championship game with an opponent to be determined from tonight’s two-game evening session.

UT starter Taylor Jungmann (7-3) picked up the win with a 7.2 inning performance, striking out four batters and walking two with one earned run. Austin Wood earned his 14th save of the season with 1.1 innings of work. Kansas State’s Matt Applegate took the loss, dropping to 2-2 on the season.

Offensively, Brandon Loy propelled the Longhorns with a 2-for-3 day at the plate and two RBI. Brandon Belt posted a 1-for-2 outing while drawing two walks and a pair of runs scored.

With the game scoreless through three and a half innings, Texas struck first with one run in the bottom of the fourth. Belt led off with a double to right center, then advanced on a groundout from Russell Moldenhauer. Preston Clark sacrificed a fly to right, allowing Belt to put UT on the board.

Kansas State responded with two runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead. Dane Yelovich was plunked with a pitch to get on base, then went to third on a single by Adam Muenster, who stole second to put both runners in scoring position. Carter Jurica grounded out to the shortstop, bringing Yelovich across to tie it at 1-1. Muenster scored on a fielding error on Nick Martini’s effort at the plate, making it 2-1 to the Wildcats’ advantage.

Texas mustered another run in the bottom of both the fifth and sixth innings to regain the lead. In the fifth, Kevin Keyes doubled and scored on a single through the left side by Connor Rowe. Sixth-inning action saw Brandon Belt draw a walk and advance two bases, and Moldenhauer sacrifice bunted Belt in to regain control 3-2.

The Longhorns extended their lead in the eighth by plating just one run on two hits to leave the final tally at 4-2. Travis Tucker reached on a double down the left field line and later scored on a single to short by Clark to put the game away.

The Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship game is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark.
