Final Big 12 Rider of the Month Honors Announced

With the 2011-12 equestrian season wrapped up, the final Big 12 equestrian honors were announced by the league office. The awards recognized student-athlete achievement from March 1 through last weekend’s NCEA National Championships.

For the first time, Kansas State had two student-athletes honored in the same month, while Baylor and Texas A&M each had one honoree. In the Equitation over Fences event, Sam Schaefer (Baylor) was named rider of the month, while Meredith Finch (Kansas State) was honored in the Equitation on the Flat discipline. In Western, Kelly Bovaird (Kansas State) was awarded the Horsemanship rider award, while Lindsey Bernbaum (Texas A&M) claimed the Reining honor.

Equitation Over Fences Riders of the Month

Sam Schaefer, Baylor, Fr., Westminster, Md.
Schaefer was 6-0 during the months of March and April as she earned Most Outstanding Rider honors at the Big 12 Championship and the NCEA Championships. She had the highest fences score in each of those meets. The freshman went 3-0 at the National Championships, averaging a score of 176 and helping Baylor to its first Hunter Seat national title. In addition, during her first meet of the season on March 10 at Texas A&M, Schaefer scored a 90 to earn MVP honors. At the Big 12 Championship, she scored a 172 in Fences to earn a point against Texas A&M in the opening round, then notched a 173 in the third-place match against K-State.

Equitation On the Flat Rider of the Month
Meredith Finch, Kansas State, Jr., Somerville, Ohio
Finch ended the last month of the 2012 season by winning eight out of 10 matches, including four-consecutive wins at the 2012 NCEA National Championships. She was named Most Outstanding Player in Equitation on the Flat for her performance at that event. Finch was the only Wildcat English rider to go undefeated at the National Championships

Horsemanship Rider of the Month

Kelly Bovaird, Kansas State, So., Tulsa, Okla.
Bovaird ended the last month of the 2012 season by winning six out of seven matches, including four postseason wins and one match-MVP award. At the NCEA National Championships, the sophomore won two rides, while racking up two more wins at the Big 12 Championship.

Reining Rider of the Month

Lindsey Bernbaum, Texas A&M, So., Dufur, Ore.
Bernbaum won a discipline-best five rides over the months of March and April to lead the Aggies to the NCEA National Championship and the program’s unprecedented fourth-straight NCEA western title. She had two wins against first-team All-American Caroline Daniels (Oklahoma), including one in the NCEA finals that helped lift A&M to the western national title. The sophomore was unbeaten in her final six rides of the season.
