February Equestrian Riders of the Month Announced

Four equestrian student-athletes were recognized with Big 12 Rider of the Month awards for competition during the month of February. In the Equitation over Fences event, Sam Schaefer (Baylor) was named Rider of the Month, while Samantha Harrison (Oklahoma State) was honored in the Equitation on the Flat discipline. In Western, Rylee Morgan (TCU) was named Horsemanship Rider of the Month, while Savannah Smith (K-State) claimed the Reining honor.

K-State and TCU will meet in Manhattan on Saturday, March 8, in the final conference meet of the 2013-14 season. Seeding for the 2014 Big 12 Equestrian Championship in Waco, Texas, will be determined following the completion of the meet.

Equitation over Fences Rider of the Month
Samantha Schaefer, Baylor, Jr., Westminster, Md.
Schaefer went 5-1 in fences during the month of February. She picked up MOP honors against Delaware State scoring 85. Schaefer followed up her performance against DSU with an 87 against TCU, while also picking up two more MOP honors against SMU and K-State. Her average winning score is 87.4.

Equitation on the Flat Rider of the Month
Samantha Harrison, Oklahoma State, Sr., La Canada, Calif.
Harrison competed in a total of six matches in the month of February, three in the equitation on the flat discipline going undefeated in the six overal matches. Harrison scored an impressive 90 when she defeated Auburn’s Tory Hoft, 90-83. Against TCU, Harrison picked up her fifth win of the season in the event over TCU’s Caitlin Ader. Her score earned her MOP and was the fourth-straight overall match where she garnered MOP honors and her second in the equitation on the flat event.

Horsemanship Rider of the Month
Rylee Morgan, TCU, Fr., Provo, Utah
Morgan went undefeated in conference competition during the month of February, defeating Mary Brown of Baylor and Lindsey McMullen of Oklahoma State. She opened the month going 3-0 before dropping a hard fought 70.5-66 decision to SMU’s Morgan Redwine this past weekend. Morgan currently sits at 4-2 overall and boasts a 3-1 mark in conference action.

Reining Rider of the Month
Savannah Smith, Kansas State, Jr., Chinook, Mont.
Smith went undefeated during the month of February, collecting a 3-0 record, including one MOP accolade. She defeated MaKayla Reed of SDSU 71.5-68.5 to open the month. Her second win came at Oklahoma State, where she defeated Mackenzie Fugitt, 72-69 to earn MOP honors. Her second win came at home against No. 5 Baylor with a win over Jessica Leach, 69-61.5.
