Girma Mecheso (Oklahoma State) and Betsy Saina (Iowa State) have been named Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week for competition April 25-28. It is the first outdoor award of the season for both student-athletes.
Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Male Athlete of the Week
Girma Mecheso, Oklahoma State, Sr., Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Mecheso’s time of 27:52.38 in the 10,000 meters at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational broke his own school record by more than 24 seconds and leads the NCAA this season by more than 42 seconds. The mark also gave Mecheso the No. 13 ranking in the world.
Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Female Athlete of the Week
Betsy Saina, Iowa State, Sr., Eldoret, Kenya
Saina recorded the third-fastest time ever run by a collegiate performer in the 10,000 meters at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational. The time of 31:37.22 is the second-fastest mark in the world this season, trailing only U.S. Olympic Trials champions Shalane Flanagan’s 31:04.85.
