CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL

The second fully-sponsored Big 12 Rowing Championship takes place Saturday, May 4, at Wyandotte County lake in Kansas City, Kan. All four of the league’s rowing squads will be participating in the six-race event that will crown a Big 12 Champion on Saturday.

Prior to last season, the sport of rowing was sponsored by the Big 12 on a limited basis for three years. The Conference recognizes the three titles won by Texas in those years (2009-2011).

The Longhorns will be looking to make it five straight crowns this year as the event returns to the Wyandotte County Lake for a third time. In 2011, UT scored 111 points to best Oklahoma (85) in the latest championship staged in Kansas City.

The six races scheduled to take place include the first varsity eight, the second varsity eight, the first varsity four, the second varsity four, the third varsity eight and the fourth varsity eight. Teams score points for their finish in each race with the first and second varsity eight and the first varsity four races carrying significantly more weight than the other three.

This week, coaches voted on the seeding for the top three races, which in turn determines the lane assignments for the event. The highest seeded team received lane three, the second seed lane four, the third seed lane two, the fourth seed lane one and the fifth seed lane five. The other three race lane assignments were determined by a random draw. Lane assignments can be changed based on weather conditions on race day.

TEAM PREVIEWS

Kansas
The depth of the Kansas Jayhawks roster has been a strong attribute this spring. The Kansas Second Varsity Eight won six consecutive races to begin the months of March and April including wins over Duke, Kansas State, and Georgetown. The First Varsity Four won five out of six races at one point this spring and won the Grand Final at the Knecht Cup beating 35 other boats. The Kansas Second Varsity Four also won the Knecht Cup and defeated Notre Dame and Duke earlier this season.

Kansas State
K-State enters this weekend’s Big 12 Championship following a strong performance at the 2013 SIRAs. The Wildcats claimed gold in the Women’s Junior Varsity 8 and Varsity 4. The 1st Varsity 8 took home bronze in the Varsity 8 grand final. K-State’s other boat in action finished fourth with the 2nd Varsity 8 also making the grand final of the Varsity 8 competition. The Wildcats also performed well at the San Diego Crew Classic earlier in April as the Varsity 4 was victorious in its petite final, and the Novice 8 finished fifth in the grand final. K-State has seen success on the water at Wyandotte County Lake this season as well, defeating Kansas in the annual Sunflower Showdown in a tightly contested battle that came down to the wire with the 1st Varsity 8 besting Kansas by only 1.4 seconds to secure the Kansas Cup.

Oklahoma
OU has had record-breaking success in its fifth season as a varsity program under head coach Leeanne Crain. The Sooners have claimed six of the seven conference Boat of the Week awards it has been eligible for this season, with four in the second varsity eight and one in both the varsity eight and varsity four. At the Longhorn Invitational, OU won every varsity race in a multi-day competition for the first time in program history. The three-day regatta was capped by a four-race sweep of Texas in the varsity events, a program first.

Texas
Texas has won all four Big 12 Championship regattas under head coach Carie Graves, the 2012 Big 12 Co-Coach of the Year. The Longhorns return six of their eight All-Big 12 honorees from a season ago, including 2012 Big 12 Co-Rower of the Year Laurel McCaig. UT takes momentum to the Big 12 Championship after producing solid performances at the Clemson Invite two weeks ago.

West Virginia
The Mountaineers have turned in one of their best seasons in recent history, as they have garnered Boat of the Week honors from the Big 12 and Conference USA a total of four times. Their recent performances, which have allowed them to gradually build momentum heading into the Big 12 Championships, include a first-place finish by the first varsity 8+ crew in Alabama against the Crimson Tide and UCF and a fifth-place finish out of 34 boats at the Knecht Cup Regatta. In addition, the second varsity 8+ crew recorded first-place finishes against Bucknell and Delaware on April 27.
