Big 12 Teams Earn Bids to NCAA Championships

Two Big 12 men’s cross country teams and Iowa State’s women’s squad earned automatic bids to the 2013 NCAA Championships which will be held Saturday, Nov. 23, in Terre Haute, Ind.

The Big 12 teams overwhelmed the Midwest competition. On the men’s side, Oklahoma State finished first overall by placing five runners in the top 10. Iowa State, Oklahoma and Kansas took third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Mohamed Hrezi (Iowa State) and Reid Buchanan (Kansas) earned individual berths.

The Iowa State women claimed their fourth straight regional title as Crystal Nelson took first overall for the Cyclones. The Cowgirls placed third overall and Monika Juodeskaite qualified for an individual appearance.

In the South Central Regional, the Texas men earned an automatic bid finishing second overall. The Longhorns placed four runners in the top 10, led by senior Ryan Dohner finishing third. Senior Marielle Hall punched her card to Indiana after finishing 24 seconds ahead of the next runner to claim in the individual crown. Baylor’s Rachel Johnson will join Hall in Terre Haute with a fifth place finish.

Texas Tech’s Kennedy Kithuka took first place in the men’s Mountain Regional, earning an individual bid to the NCAA Championships to defend his NCAA title.

At-large selections will be announced Saturday, Nov. 16, at 2 p.m. CT to complete the national championship field.
