Texas Claims Third Straight Big 12 Title

The 15th-ranked Texas Rowing team won the third annual Big 12 Rowing Championship at the Wyandotte Reservoir, marking its third-straight conference title after capturing the previous seven Big 12 Invitational crowns.

UT totaled 111 points, while Oklahoma finished second with 85, Kansas claimed third with 67 and Kansas State finished fourth with 54 points. The Longhorns won all five of their races, winning the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, first varsity four, first novice eight and second novice eight.

The Longhorns' first varsity eight crew of coxswain Megan Kelly, stroke Jennifer VanderMaarel, Laurel McCaig, Jacqueline Gorcyca, Jessica Glennie, Jelena Zunic, Anna Thomson, Sydney Boyes and Felicia Izaguirre-Werner won its race handily, posting a time of 6:47.7 to best Oklahoma (6:57.9), Kansas State (7:02.5) and Kansas (7:03.5).
Texas' second varsity eight boat comprised of coxswain Emma Dirks, stroke Charity McDonald, Tajana Lovric, Hannah Moon, Chelsea Burns, Olivia Nail, Karli Sheahan, Katarina Susac and Courtney Nicklas cruised to victory with its time of 6:55.9, downing Oklahoma (7:09.8), Kansas State (7:14.4) and Kansas (7:16.5).

UT's first varsity four crew of coxswain Katie Sayre, Shelly Beck, Devon Clark, Sally Tunell and Sarah Pedersen crossed the finish in 7:44.1 to knock off Oklahoma (7:50.9), Kansas State (8:10.9) and Kansas (8:16.0).

The Horns' first novice eight boat made up of coxswain Rachel Donnelly, stroke Brenna Coldren, Phoebe Jordan, Lauren Studey, Megan Sinclair, Johanna Neuber, Kaylinh Ly, Jillian Byron and Renee Gutberlet clocked a time of 7:18.3 to defeat Kansas (7:23.0), Kansas State (7:24.9) and Oklahoma (7:29.6).

Texas' second novice eight shell of coxswain Kat Tong, stroke Stephanie Bickford, Jessica Jin, Deidra Perez, Kiera Tate, Sarah Jones, Michelle Cuellar, Ashley McCrory and Sonia Puente posted a victory with its time of 7:37.9 to edge Kansas (7:46.3) and Oklahoma (8:03.8).

The overall championship is determined by a point scale that designates a certain number of points for first, second, third and fourth place in each race. The first varsity race awards 50, 41, 32 and 23 points, while the 2V8 awards 32, 26, 20 and 14 and the 1V4 17, 14, 11 and 8. In the novice races the 1N8 awards eight, six, four and two points and the 2N8 awards four, three, two and one points.
