May 19, 2011

Three Big 12 rowing athletes have been named to the Capital One Academic All-District Women's At-Large First Team, as presented by the College Sports Information Directors of America.  Nicole Schneider (Kansas) in District 7 along with Kelsey Witten and Nicole Furmanek (Oklahoma) in District 6 were honored.

The trio was part of 10 student-athletes named to the teams in each district, which is selected from the sports of bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis and water polo.

Schneider owns a 3.94 grade-point average in civil engineering.  She earned the Dr. Gerald Lage Award and was also named Academic All-Big 12 this past season.  In her career, she was named to both the athletic director's honor roll and the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll seven times.  Five times she was tabbed to the school of engineering dean's list.  Schneider is a two-time member of KU's First Varsity Eight.  In 2009, she was named the team's most improved oarswoman.
The recognition marked Witten's second selection to the first team, who is a graduate student in Adult and Higher Education.  She was also named Academic All-Big 12 in 2011 and was honored as a Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award winner.  Witten has been named to the OU President's Honor Roll (4.00 GPA) seven times, the Dean's Honor Roll (3.50-3.99) twice and is an OU honors scholar. She also has been named to the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll five times and is a five-time Sooner Scholar.

Furmanek was named a 2011 Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award winner by the Big 12 earlier this year. She was named Academic All-Big 12 Team as well.  A 2010 CRCA All-Academic selection, she has served as the rowing representative on OU's Student Athlete Advisory Council.  Furmanek is a two-time OU President's Honor Roll honoree, has been named to the Dean's Honor Roll once and is a three-time Sooner Scholar and Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll selection.

To be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must carry a minimum 3.30 cumulative GPA, be at least a sophomore in athletics and academics eligibility and be a starter or key reserve.
